Subject: Upper Strut Brace Fitting Question

Right, thought I'd keep this out of the lower brace thread as it's too bloody long already LOL

I've settled on a design with the upper strut brace I'm pretty happy with, as it should fit most phases with plenty of bonnet clearance and it's still a lot stiffer than what's already on the market.

However, it might require removing the upper cover from the ECU box to get it to fit on some cars, or at least some slight trimming to give clearance.


Now, is that something that would bother anyone - or would you rather have some form of cover come with it (if possible) that cleared the brace. (or if not, back to the drawing board)

Other option might be to offer modified ECU boxes to drop them down an inch Hmm

Same, ecu will be inside. And it's a shed, just with some shiny bits bolted to it

Maybe some form of cover to keep any water off the main plug would be good though.

Well mine's coming off as I prefer the new design to my old carbon one (although I might still make mine half carbon Big grin), so I'll be ditching the lid, but then mine's an old clonky shed so I couldn't give a fook about whether it's perfect under the bonnet or not LOL

its a sealed plug, be fine! should see a 405 ecu, in the bloody scuttle panel!

Well, at the minute it just clears by a fag paper. But given tolerances on Pug cars and a bit of vibration I'd imagine it'll rub it.
I don't want to lift the brace as there's some option extra that bolt on nicely at the moment to improve other bits of the car LOL

Don't know yet, depends what I settle on! Be somewhere between the OMP + whiteline ones pricing wise is about as close as I can tell you atm LOL

Right, this is nowhere near a production version - it's welded out of bits of random scrap (hence the bends being different side to side), and there's some other bracing bits to go on it yet - but I can get it to just clear the cover - it may rub slightly on some cars, I've going to check it on as many as I can next week to see what fitment is like.

Anyway, just thought I'd let you have a bit of a preview.

Aye, but I need it to fit on everything Big grin

Phase 1 bonnet props can't stay on the bonnet btw, probably make some fittings on the brace for 'em.

should fit a ZX just fine, bonnet prop goes from strut to front panel not on the bonnet.

Like it. Nice, clean, simple and rigid design with no pivot points or other compromises.

Are you going to make it in steel or ally?

I am from the "strut braces do work" school of thought. I put a strut brace on my old Audi quattro which was a factory part from a later model and the difference was definitely there. But it is subtle so I can understand why people say they don't work, especially the not-very-rigid designs that are out there.

More chassis rigidity can't be a bad thing now can it? Especially on the most powerful model in the range.

They'll be steel, it's not that heavy even in steel, as it's quite thin-walled and there's no heavy bolted joints.

There's a few other parts yet that will explain why I want the stiffness of the steel Smile

would they be even more rigid if they swapped over to the other side of the mount or am I being thick?
I.e
front most left side bolt matching up to the rear most on the right etc.
