Hmmm I had hids on the work wagon as I thought they would handy as I live deep in the sticks. Turns out they just p1ssed off every other road user every day. Ignored the abuse until I was followed home by the work wago one night ? Ditched the hids next day !

We have all been followed at night by some c0ck with really bright lights ? Well that's you with hids !

If they were really 30k, then 90% of the light output is probably out of the visible spectrum.

Bet they light up the road really well with only 3.5w actually being useful then....

Well i currently run h7r's so the bulb has a reflector built on to it to distribute the beam evenly.

Basically I had a surprise visit from a VOSA inspector a few weeks ago and while he was down he said about hid's must have working washers and auto levelling. I then checked on the mot computer while I was failing something else on a car and there was nothing about them in there at all... So presume its another one of those things that hasnt "gone live" yet.
Like any dashboard light faults other than ABS you still can't fail yet only advise. Also they have now scrapped the engine management light completely.

They don't need auto levelling provided the car is on 'sports' suspension - i.e, something with stiff enough springs that the aim isn't going to move much even when loaded up.

The MOT Tester's manual for 2012 says this:

quote:
Vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) or LED dipped beam headlamps may be fitted
with headlamp washers and a suspension or headlamp self levelling system.

Where such systems are fitted, they must work; however, it is accepted that it may not be possible to readily determine the functioning of self levelling systems. In such cases, the benefit of the doubt must be given.

So there's no specific exceptions, it's simply a best effort. However if you dazzle a copper, you'll get a fine.

As you should do for having stupid lights Thumbs up

If you have washers or levellers and they don't work, that's a Reason for Failure.

do anything to p**s off a copper and he'll find some way to get you even if it's just a producer to get your back up!,..

just to clarify what you mean,..

self levelers = when the car automatically finds the correct height for the bulbs unlike ours that are manuel?
Washers = the washer jet system for headlights?

I've never had an issue in the 4 years of running the 1200k HID's and I've been behind a police car quite a few times in them,..
MOT's were fine! good beam pattern from them!
i'm more worried about the colour legality?

I once got pulled for putting Fannyfaz's (previous owners plates on for 1 night after 1 fell off somewhere)
he just put a note on the system and gave me 10 days to remove it LOL

Yes, cars with HIDs fitted as standard have to have automatically levelling lights, so if you have three passengers in the back they'll aim down by themselves to stop you dazzling traffic.

Because HIDs are so much brighter even a small bit of dirt on the lenses can scatter the light where it's not meant to be pointing, again dazzling people. Therefore again, new cars have to have headlight washers.

If your car has either, they have to work to pass an MOT.

Gotta admit I'm with Mei on this one. White can look nice and classy, anything coloured and I think it cheapens it and makes you look like a bit of a chav.

But to be fair, you did say they wouldn't be to everyone's taste.

I have to agree with the whole lowered argument so doesn't appear to effect other road users. I have HIDs, but only 6000k ones as I just prefer the white look, however they do have a hint of blue at that point.

Autolevellers are b*llcks to be honest... These BMW X5's still manage to blind every road user because the car them selves are sat so high.

I've never been flashed by an on coming car or had anything to indicate that I've blinded them.

Saying all that I think purple is a tad to far for my taste, but I can see why you like them, especially on a black car.

Gone for the Mace Windu look... Ninja Razz

everything higher up than me blinds me Laugh my ass off i suppose that's my fault for being low,..
i've been meaning to do the 406 Rear view mirror conversion that auto dims when there are bright lights shone at it due to the crystals integrated into the mirror there's an FAQ on it on here! Smile

as for the purple I'm just looking to tie in the purple shimmer of Astor Grey
not that it matters in the dark when you can't see it! LOL
at the moment she stands out as soon as every other taxi and Muppet start using them i'll take them out! Smile
