Some 21hours on, I'm still wide eyed and shaking my bemused head, after getting shunted from behind in traffic last night.

On the outside the car doesn't look so bad, stoved in bumper and panel above the bumper, cracked number plate - no biggy. By my relief was short lived when i then looked inside and found the boot floor is bent and creased accros the width, about 100mm in from the back. Its hard to image I wont be soon hearing the words "beyond economic repair" fall causally from the mouth of some insurance donkey. Sad

Ive had the Rallye some 4 years now, and have FINALLY got it where I want it, being the perfect compromise between road and track.

Its all bitterly bitterly disappointing.

Sorry to hear that Sad

Is the car all above board RE insurance with everything declared?

Hope it works out for you.

What hit you and was there much damage to that?

It may end up being a write off with the option to buy it back. New bumper and repaired panel and you still have your car.

It will be a write off for sure. Yes Sad
If you can buy it back and fix the damage, that will be your best option. Yes

    Thanks

What would be involved in repairing a creased floor? And more importantly, what is it likely to have done to the chassis? impact speed was low, prob 10mph, but it was still force enough to get folding.

Mattyrallye had exactly the same damage as described. Was about a grand to fix properly. Sad
Looks spot on now though! Smile
If you go through insurance it'll defo be a write off. Or you can fix it yourself. Depends what your excess is and if the bloke who hit you will contribute instead of going through insurance.

Too late for all that, its already rolling down the insurance route.

The other party has accepted full liability so I wont be claiming against my policy and therefore wont pay any excess or lose no claims *IF* its possible to repair. Otherwise I guess i'll look into buying it back and what options that leaves me.

what I do know is that the whole situation is horses**t

Unfortunately your premuim will increase though come renewal time as you will now be ticking the 'Yes' box when asked 'have you been involved in an accident in the last 5 years'. The fact it wasn't your fault, or your claim is irrelevant. You have been involved in one statistically.

It's wrong, but it's how it works. You need to declare Yes to this, as if you don't and have another accident, it could be void.

Crap news. It'll be a write off for sure, i'd be inclined to get paid out, then buy the salvage back, what Ash said above would be my way of repairing it, then continue to use it as a track car, pocketing the difference.

I'm sure I've heard you can refuse a "wright off" status, if you are not the party at fault you can request to be put back to the position you were in before and demand the car be repaired...

And I'm sure if its the fault of someone else not you, you can choose your own place to have it repaired and dont have to use their approved bodyshop...

Must be someone on here who's a bit more in the know

If I was in a £200 car FC insured and it was hit so much that it was a banana with a twisted chassis, I could demand it be repaired?

I think you would probably find it goes down the uneconomical to repair route and they pay you out for the value with you having little choice.

My step brother pushed a crease out of a boot floor (think it was on an Astra) by placing a sizeable piece of timber across the rear arches in the boot and a piece across the boot lip with a bottle jack between them.

    Worked a treat.

Surely the labour to do that would be more than the repair costs?

    correct!

Your claiming off the offenders insurance and there policy would cover an amount higher for damaged caused to property or personal injury to others.

Your car should be repaired no matter what the cost as it was not your fault and the insurance will pay the damages.

Dont accept a write off as they will try this as an easier option and to get an older car off the road!

I had someone hit me years ago causing damage to rear quater and alloy wheel damage and rear bumper and they offered me a settlement to write off so I just said no I want it repaired so they went back to other insurance company and said no im not accepting anything other then a full repair.
Obviously if they can get away with a clousure offer then they will alway offer it first to get out of a garage bill.

Check ya policy as it will cover in excess to cover third party loss ie damage to property, just checked mine and its £20,000,00

But how about if the damage was really quite substantial.

I imagine there are limits. And when those limits are reached, it really could be tough tits, here's a payment.

Agreed, but that's because there is a limit. As far as an insurance assessor is concerned, is for example 3k in repairs for a 306 excessive? If so, yet it's not your fault - how far can you push the demand?
