Hi all at gti-6/rallye OC,

Iv recently become the owner of a 1999 306 Rallye and im after some helpful advice if anyone could be so kind...
Firstly the spolier (plastic) is not in the best possible condition (picture below) and im wondering if its as simple a job of just removing it, sanding/smoothing it down and then painting/back to blacking it?

Also as i am a novice to such a rare and impressive car (first car actually woop woop!), im not so sure on afew other things ie whereabouts of the air filter (iv heard and think its located below the battery) and am possibly looking to relocate it and update it to a forced induction through the cap for the foglight, is that a smart move or does it validate the car as more boy-racer than enthusiast? Im opting for the more enthusiast aproach...

If anyone can welcome me to the OC site with some advice on both the above and any other helpful starting out tips it would be much appreciated. Thanks, Ross Smile

Hi, what I can tell you is the air filter is located behind the arch liner on the N/S front wheel. It's in a metal casing and from what I've read, the air filter is very good as standard on these so not really any point in doing anything to it. Nice car to have as a first one and well done for writing a refreshingly well written post Thumbs up

edit: Welcome to the club Wave

Hi Ian, thanks for your reply and for the warm welcome. Iv also heard/seen similar things about the air filter from this site, just wondered if relocating it and changing it for a forced induction would make it any better really, obviously il go with your advice as I am a total novice but would it be worth cleaning the filter out at all or is it a bit of a pain to access it due to its location lol? Any advice is helpful, and yes it's a brilliant car for a first car (I am 24 and have missed several crucial years of motoring so I thought a rallye would be the perfect starting point as iv always had an unhealthy obsession lol). Could you offer any advice on the spoiler issue at all as its the only negative thing on the exterior of an otherwise mint condition motor :/ thanks again. Ross Smile

Welcome.

The air filter is easy to change. You access it from underneath and remove the three clips to open the airbox. Assuming it's a normal paper element filter, you can't really clean them so just replace it if it's dirty.

As for the spoiler, it's definitely beyond the realms of "back to black". You would probably need to fill that deep pitting, rub down, prime and paint it.

Regarding the induction kit, that's just a matter of preference for sound as it won't actually make any difference performance wise. It's a lot of money for no gain to be fair. I'm not really clued up on bodywork but I would say you're on the right lines with what you suggested by sanding to get it smooth again. I've tried searching for you but I can't find anything as yet...

How refreshing!!!
Welcome to the clubWave
The box at the top rhs of the page is the search box, if you key in induction kit & it will come up with all the info you need.
There is also a FAQ
http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=20702

I'd say try back to black on the spoiler first before you go down a more costly route...

Cool

I think il get the car up on stands over the weekend and have a look at the filter to see what condition it's in, if it does need replacing can I just get them from a local car shop or am I best to get from a specialist (assuming it is still a standard air filter of course)? Would there be any benefit in the long run to replace the whole filter (not induction kit, just an aftermarket filter)? I'm sorry if these are standard basic questions but everyone has to start somewhere n I want to do the best for my lovely little Razz lol, it's the pride of my driveway Smile haha. And with regards to the spoiler is there a certain paint I should use? Would it be a better idea to get a replacement metal spoiler (I'm not talking a sky scraper boy racer job obviously lol).

Thanks for your reply midlife, I did back to black the spoiler a day before taking the picture and as you can see its effects we're minimal to say the least lol :/ any indepth info regarding the next steps would be appreciated and also any other information/tips regarding starting points on things to get my rallye obsession/project off to a flying start would be great. Just to give a heads up the owner before me replaced the cambelt, clutch and cams around 1500 miles ago and has also had a scorpion stainless exhaust fitted (not sure if it's a straight though or anything yet but over the weekend il be investigating under the car further... Tbf the service history is outstanding, every purchase made has a receipt and also every mot from new is included. The car was an absolute steal! Big grin

I run a modified airbox. Much better than the k&n that was on it, plus its enclosed so I ain't worried about sucking up water all the time. Am I correct in think benfleet is in kent?

I have a feeling that spoiler won't back to black very well im afraid. Spraying won't last long i'd have thought either as its the foam style one. If you want to spray one i'd try to get a plastic one.

Thanks Aaron for your reply. I take it the air box your now run is modified by yourself and isn't a stock item as such? Iv also heard about the issues regarding water being sucked up and causing a lot of problems, obviously I want to avoid that so any help/info on good filters to use would be great Smile lol. Also with regards to the spoiler, where is the best place to pick a plastic one up (tbh I thought the one I have was plastic :/ lol) and showing just how novice I am : could you tell me what style I need, it's a t reg rallye so that makes it a phase 3? Could be hugely wrong! Thanks Aaron...

Agreed - my car had K&N fitted when I got it but I bought a factory airbox to replace it. Sucking hot (less dense) air into the engine actually reduces performance, and too close to the road can mean nasties get in there. Sucking more air means larger particles get past filter (road salt, dust/dirt, etc) = not good for the engine.

Rather than bling bling modifications of dubious value, it is best to make sure the car is performing as it should - a good service and identifying worn bits and pieces is where to start. I'd start with tyres, brakes incl fluid, good engine oil, cam belt, engine mounts, suspension bushes etc.

That spoiler might be past it - I'd get advice from someone who knows like a decent panelbeater. People on here sell bits, so you could get a second hand one for a good price. I've found people on here very helpful.

Nice car and colour - I've got one similar. The Rallye is (still) a great drive at any price, as one review back in the '90s said. Great first car as well. Mine has needed a few things to get it tip top, but that is normal for a car over a decade old.

Good choice and welcome.

Hi mik thanks for your reply, I know what you mean about the filter sucking in nasties etc, not a cheap route to go down in the long run :/ I was planning on having an indepth look over the air filter and engine but I didn't manage it due to an untimely visit to a&e.
If the air filter has been changed would it be a beneficial choice to go back to the factory air tight (if I can get hold of one... Any suggestions on where may have one?)
The tyres are all brand new Yokohama's (even on the spare which is also a team dynamics racing rim to match the others), the Cambelt has been replaced earlier this year and over the past 2years the clutch , exhaust, cams (now gti-6's) and a few other parts have been serviced and replaced so all in all the whole car is in great order Smile I am planning on changing the engine oil and doing a basic oil/fluid service myself this week (want to do as much to the car myself as possible to get a better understanding of things, any recommendations as to what oil is best to use?).
Also iv had a few people say to me to use premium petrol, is that necessary on the Rallye?
Will be posting more pictures of the car up later tonight As someone said too, I must admit I have also found people to be very helpful on here Smile

Alex, would be good to see you around, quite surprised there is another owner as local as you are to me, will be very helpful... Am going to be keeping my eyes peeled Smile
Thanks again, Ross

The mod on mine is resonator is taken off and a bung welded in and a k&n panel filter. Works really well.
As a T plate id say phase 2. Most rallyes seem to have ph2 lights and a smaller spoiler. There are some varients I believe though. Smile

Also, be sure to use a genuine filter as they have a non return valve in which most cheaper ones dont. I have always used normal shell petrol and had no issues. Smile

I just chucked a K&N replacement filter in the standard airbox mate, you can spend a lot of money on carbon enclosed boxes with minimal gains.

With that spoiler, I'd be looking at a replacement tbh. They're pretty cheap and will save you a lot of hassle rubbing it down and repainting it. Keep an eye on the parts for sale section and I'm sure one will pop up for sale, also, look for people breaking 6's/rallye's

Oh, and welcome to the club Wave
