they are a ball ache to do!i've only made 2 sets! one set are on my car,.. the other how ever shoot me a silly price to make another set and I'll consider it! or there is the possibility i'll be selling the sets that are on my car i'm not 100% happy with them the last set were much better which is good ambition to do an even better job! but i have a million and one ideas i want to try out 1st,.. here some mid development,.. De-badged grill carbon wrapped a grille I De-badged using mould release wax underneath pried it away and wrapped it again so full carbon grille,.. Petrol cap trims,.. Petrol cap discs,. a set of wheel centers for my Superleggera's just a flat boot badge and a bonnet badge,... very time consuming! ________________________________________ Proud Member of the ASTOR Owners Club |

I was just about to say is this laminated or have you tried making any moulds before. It looks really good work and it's something that I've been wanting to give a go for a while now but I've got so much other stuff to I want to do I've just not got round to it yet!!I'm guessing it's quite hard to do though as you mention a few imperfections? Nice one for doing the carbon masks though as they're something I've always liked the idea of and it's the first time I've ever seen some! Definitely inspired me to get my arse into gear and get some other stuff finished before cracking on with something like this as they look really good |

I used a west system 105 stuff before that was a pain in the ass! slight yellow pigment anyway but as long as you laqure it it should be fine it's the u.v. that yellows the lacquer,.. i'm trying sp115 ultra clear UV resistant resin at the moment,.. using one of those pumps to get the exact ratio,.. i used digital scales before but it seemed to be a but hit and miss weather it would set properly ________________________________________ Proud Member of the ASTOR Owners Club |

Definitely inspired me to get my arse into gear and get some other stuff finished before cracking on with something like this as they look really good yeah,.. it's learning how to wrap your objects pull it tight without getting crap all over it and trying to get it right 1st time there isnt much room for error! then the resin it's self can be a pain in the arse!!! i've had bubbles and voids I couldn't get rid of I've had bits of the carbon raising up for some unknown reason i've sanded too deep while trying to clean up the resin I've had the resin not set at all and had to scrub it off some cases i had to start again i've had the resin blemish because the temperature dropped a little,.. the mask of the ph3 is quite a hard shape to wrap! if you can find some knackered lights you can get appart practice on those 1st! the masks of a ph2 are simpler and may look better carbon fiber laminated,... I may give one a go,.. have you managed to open a set of lights up yet? like I've mentioned in the past i may do a tutorial on doing them but it would have to be a video tutorial because theres just too much to explain and it's better to see it being done 1st hand! I'll do one when I finally get fed up of stabbing myself with a screwdriver digging out the old gasket,.. or when it finally comes to saying fair well as my parting gift ________________________________________ Proud Member of the ASTOR Owners Club |

I'll do one when I finally get fed up of stabbing myself with a screwdriver digging out the old gasket,.. or when it finally comes to saying fair well as my parting gift Cheers for the reply, certainly seems a lot harder putting into practice compared to how it looks on the videos, some interesting points about bubbles etc though so guessing you have to be really, really careful when mixing the resin? Temps interesting too as I tend to do all car work in the garage so may wait until the 2 week summer comes!! Certainly seems like bit of a case of trial and error to begin with though so think I'll get a decent supply to have a few attempts when I finally do have a crack at it. I've black masked a few sets of lights before but always been Depo's or Lucas' as the Valeos always seemed to hard to get into and the others so much easier. As much as I'd like a set of carbon masks, don't think I'd attempt them for a bit as they are a pretty crazy shape so fair play for doing them!! To be honest, I'd quite like to just have a go at moulding straight away. Start simple with something like fuel flap covers as no biggie if they dont work and get ruined but then there are some bits I'd to laminate like the wing mirror bodies and bumper grill eventually if possible!! Looks really good what you're doing though and good to see that it's possible to get good results DIY at home. I'd be happy if I could get a grill like that for sure!! |

this new resin is like a dream compared to that last stuff! if your going to give it a go get sp115I found it cheapest at Carbonology,.. but if you add west coast fiberglass to your facebook they always have offers for things like 50% off all resin prices at random times if you can catch them at the right time,.. so far i've not i'm just applying my build up coats as far as I can tell there are no bubbles either! it flows well and doesn't clump together as easily like the west system 105 stuff I used last time!,... if your going to try mold something try something that just bolts on like a coil pack cover,.. trying to mold things with clips like the petrol cap covers just doesn't seem to work and if you could the resin to fill where the clip is it would break or chip too easily! I'd love to do a mold of a ph3 De-badged bonnet,.. but like you I'll have to work my way up to that if I ever take it that far! ________________________________________ Proud Member of the ASTOR Owners Club |

Nice one bud, that's a great help and could certainly save a few quid! I think I've bought from them before as I made a few things from fibre glass on the old tractor so quite confident with using it hence why I wouldn't mind giving a mould a go.I was thinking of just cutting the clips off and bonding them on tbh if it all worked as like you say, I presumed the clips would be a b**ch to work around! I think I'd wanted them bonded on for security anyway but in an ideal world, it would be best to make them exactly OEM fit as that is how I would want them to look. De-badge bonnet would be amazing to achieve really, should be possible with enough practice but like you say, would take quite a bit to work up to that but I always believe in the saying where there is a will, there is a way and it's looking good so far so who knows!?! Definitely know that these things take time and effort to get right though it is possible as I've not long resprayed a bumper but I'm certainly not in a rush to be doing another one anytime soon!! |
