After reading up on THIS THREAD and posting my interest in the conversion around this time last year HERE, I've now done a bit more research and will be getting the LPG Conversion done to my car before Pugfest

I've had a quote from Global Auto Gas and I've been quoted £950 for the full conversion which is done by an approved installer and certified. I'm yet to talk the price down but I've only recenetly received the quote and not going to talk price down until I'm ready to have my 6 converted.

I've had quotes from more local locations to me but they tend to me another £500 on top. So I think a weekend with my sister in London would be good then a cruise home on gas!

Latest average prices to me are around:

Unleaded 95: → p/L 138.9 p/L 07/03/2012

I've worked out that I drive around 15,000 miles a year and spend roughly £230p/m (£2760p/a) on petrol (2011-2012). If I convert to LPG my costs will be roughly £138p/m (£1656p/a) on gas. Add £10 a month on petrol for arguments sake = £1776 a year on fuel. Plus there's the cost of an additional service for the LPG conversion, I guess £100 a year so costs will be £1876. This means I'm saving around £1,000 a year!

On top of this, I have had confirmation that because my car was registered after on or after March 2001 (Y reg), I will be able to claim 10%-20% back on my car tax which is currently £260 a year. That saves me a further £40 roughly!

So if I have the conversion done, it will pay for itself in less than a year, it'll reduce my car tax slightly, some reviews say there's no change in performance reading the above threads of people who have done the conversion to their GTi6. My insurance may decrease (Last time I got a quote last year there was no change).

I have read reviews of the valves not lubricating on early LPG Conversions but this includes a kit to keep them lubricated. So I see no problems to worry about at all.


So just to clear the above up, Positives of a LPG Conversion could be (not done yet):
Lower emisions
Cheaper car tax
Cheaper London congestion charge
Possibly lower car insurance
Saves me £1000 a year!
No spare wheel to worry about

Negatives of having the LPG Conversion:
Going to cost around £950 for the conversion
I don't like the look of a plastic cap on the rear side of my bumper
Slightly lower MPG reported on some conversions
Small chance of slight loss of power
More weight to car with extra tank and kit. But not much more as spare wheel will be removed

Just to add the tank will be where my spare wheel currently is, so no space lost either!

That's all I can think off to sum up my thoughts on the LPG Conversion that I will be doing in a few months time, ready for Pugfest if anyone wants to see or ask anything please feel free


ps. I believe that if my car was registered before 2001, I wouldn't be able to claim back on the car tax. So having a newer registered car has its benefits on this one Tax rebate more info clicky 1 and clicky 2

good luck with driving around with a bomb in the boot, think it ok for mercs or motorway trawlers but you have a highly tuned french hatch back and it is just another thing to go wrong really can't see the point in throwing another 2k at an old 2.0 litre hatch back that will be dead in a couple of years.

i have a 1.6 d turbo in a mini it is a diesel it does 50 mpg booting it around and supposedly 72 mpg if driven economically it costs 20 quid a year to tax and is as quick as a fiat 500 abarth. not banging the drum for minis but i think it is the best car with this engine in, you could have a 207 or a bmw i believe they all use the same engine.
by the time you have paid for your lpg conversion in savings i more than likely could have bought your car and paid for the conversion.
i will also add that lpg has gone mad on the price it used to be half the price of petrol it is no where near that now

Some are tax exempt and return as good as 70mpg. Just good for thought.

I read somewhere when doing my research that LPG cars are actually safer than petrol, mainly because the tank is safer/stronger



I did think about having an HDI instead. But its not quite the same and I still want the 6 till the day I die even if its still costing me more than and HDI, I'm still getting more smiles per miles and power for pugfest etc



What do you mean? My calculations were roughly £137 a month on LPG

£10 gets naff all petrol and say you got 40 miles from that when you can't find a station a few times a month. I would just be surprised of you only had to put several litres of petrol in a month so would probably pop £20 down. Do you still have to start on petrol these days and then flick over to LPG?

We bought a V8 Discovery 1 with LPG conversion in November 2010. The plan was to trailer my 6 to and from trackdays as the missus was scared I would bin the car and we'd be stranded.

It's now more or less my daily driver as it's so comfortable and the V8 rumble is niiiiice

It's a great car and it's been really useful to transport cars that friends have bought or want to scrap. That's because it's a Discovery though.

As far as LPG is concerned, you get less power and about 80% of the economy compared to petrol. It starts on petrol and switches over automatically when the engine is up to temperature. If you stall it does the same regardless of whether the engine is hot or not

I will not talk about fuel consumption though

There aren't that many reliable LPG stations near me so I have to travel quite a way to be sure I can fill up.

Got to be honest, its not something i would do.
They do less mpg on lpg too so its not quite as clear cut as a comparison of price per liter
I'd much rather:
Get new suspension
or
Get tbs and cams
or
be half way towards the kit you need for a charger
