Just wondering if there were any different parts used? We've got a 206 lump in the workshop on a stand... |

It's a completely different design of engine mate. And the GTi-6 engine is far superior to the 206 lump. ________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone |

And the GTi-6 engine is far superior to the 206 lump. oh no its not!! on both counts the head is an evolution of the later XU heads, bottom end is an alloy open deck with cast in steel liners, not removable. Full ladder type main bearing meaning much stiffer especially at high revs meaning far less vibration. they produce very good torque figures, more than XU's. Sandy Brown's EW thread Longman's 206 190 was an EW10 138 engine, with bodies and an exhaust and omex ecu, much more torque than the XU as well. you wont get a gti6 to that power level without cams, let alone a 136bhp XU10J4R! ________________________________________ need a part number? get on here - http://public.servicebox.peugeot.comBring on the Trumpets. |

I was thinking more generally as a standard '6' lump vs a standard 206 138bhp job. ________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone |

well its lighter for a start...but in a normal road 306 where costs are a priority, then yeah a standard RS lump would be better, if you can find a good one... ________________________________________ need a part number? get on here - http://public.servicebox.peugeot.comBring on the Trumpets. |

Is the cambelt assembly the same? The head & rocker cover to the eye look the same, apart from obvious bits like the inlet |

At ime of production the RS lump was very much ahead of it's time. It's still a bloody good engine but nowadays it's all about variable cam timing etc. ________________________________________ Team Nile 6Team: 40.2 MPG 5 x a 306 owner! currently abusing type r's in a town near you ™ I truely live for the 306 ® Build date: 29th October 1997 Wednesday's car midweek madness |

Matt - I agree, the design was very much advanced for the generation of N/A engines back in the day. VVT is a favourite used by many manufacturers today, however the XU10J4RS lump is still very tunable and widely used. It is also a completely different beast once boosted. ________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone |

The RS is a reliable engine Mei, if it isn't abused and regularly serviced. ________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone |

Std form rs engine is better. If we wanted so much torque we would buy diesels. An the 206 has't got enough torque to make in for the downfall in power. Iam not doubting you could tune the 206 engine more thow.________________________________________ 230bhp 205 gti6 |

welshpug! wrote: guess so, but how many HG's have I seen gone recently? they all have been looked after as far as I know Extremely reliable. Poor maintanence will kill any engine. how many time have I seen the oh it over heated and cooked the HG story? And why is this because something silly like no coolant or the fans stopped working. Nothing to do with the engine. *edit* strong enough and reliable enough to run low boost with no mods. ________________________________________ Team Nile 6Team: 40.2 MPG 5 x a 306 owner! currently abusing type r's in a town near you ™ I truely live for the 306 ® Build date: 29th October 1997 Wednesday's car midweek madness |

Rubbish its extremely reliable. They aren't bad, thats it. Built at a time when 100k was the norm for the life of a car. Doesn't make a blind bit of difference on the maintenance they will still blow sooner or later. If they nearly all got to over 200k, like certain engines, then its happy days, but they don't. I think the other main thing is it that most will have been driven hard. The RS engine is better than average, but no more. Weighs a lot and certainly was thought about in terms of head and valve design. Its also a big old lump compared to the ford and rover offerings. The Mi16 was ahead of its time, the RS is basically a revamp of that. Loads of other engines run on low boost with no mods too. Its not rare. Stupid thing to say about the torque and wanting a diesel. Try a car with torque that revs as well. ________________________________________ Nothing to see here |

All engines have their weak points - that is the nature of mass production and working to a budget.________________________________________ Nothing to see here |

Miles has a 280k GTi6 IIRC?I personally find the RS lump returns a very linear power delivery which can feel dull. I find the Renault Sport 172 lumps provide a much better delivery of similar power. ________________________________________ |

The gfs mum has a 172 cup. in 1st gear but not very quick through the others. I like the cam kick at 5k tho which is more noticeable than then 6. But f*ck working on one ________________________________________ Team Nile 6Team: 40.2 MPG 5 x a 306 owner! currently abusing type r's in a town near you ™ I truely live for the 306 ® Build date: 29th October 1997 Wednesday's car midweek madness |

180 has 202 Nm of torque (149 lbft), I would imagine its smoothness and non peaky delivery made it "feel" slow, not to mention the fact that many had ecu issues that required a software update and they were up to full power after.GTISID must be one hell of a powerwalker 138 has 190 Nm of torque, 89% of which spread between 1800 and 5750, peak is at 6k which I would imagine are due to the restrictive inlet and exhaust manifolds, given the dramatic increases Longman saw with just throttle bodies and exhaust manifold alone, torque from this one was 20 lbft more than the 180 engine. 90 hp 8 valve DW10 only has 205 Nm ________________________________________ need a part number? get on here - http://public.servicebox.peugeot.comBring on the Trumpets. |

dangti6 wrote: Miles has a 280k GTi6 IIRC? Yes, but that is one car. Bet there are loads of Omegas, Saabs, Volvos and diesel Passats tooling about at warp speed with that kind of mileage on them. All on the original engine - hell my dad's old Saab 900 had 285k when we finally scrapped it on its original engine and clutch. The 138 was dog shit slow though. 149lbft on the 180? Is that all? The RS can be 156 if you do it right ________________________________________ Nothing to see here |
