My mistake, I didn't fully read your post, agreed 316Ti has similar crack resistance performance to 304 in high temperature applications provided the correct grade of filler is used, if not its worse. However I'd still make it from 304 as its not worth the extra money to prevent a bit of surface oxidation, especially if you are considering using a performance coating like ceramikote to keep under bonnet temps down?

in my car i dont use any wrapping on the manifold to reduce under bonnet temp. I do use a shield to protect the ECU since its located very close to the turbo. The downpipe is wrapped to retain heat and gas velocity.

hmmm, that explains why my longlife is still pretty shiny 7 years on, but has a cracked hanger, but doesn't explain why the magnex manifold looks rusty and is cracked LOL (well, poor design probably...)

Metal fatigue from poor design is the problem there fella.

Hello all,
Been to the dyno 2 days ago.
We have optimized the maps with boost controller off and with boost controller on. I am using an external boost controller.

With the boost controller off. kPa starts at 170 (4000 rpm) and ends at 189kPa (7200rpm) - 265bhp and 31kgm at the wheels

With the boost controller on. kPa starts at 225 (4000 rpm) and ends at 198kPa (7200rpm) - 316bhp and 39kgm at the wheels

I've been wondering what can be the reason for the boost drop-off, and whether they can be estimated from logs:

1. Maybe the spring for the internal wastegate (GT28RS) cant hold the higher boost.
2. Maybe the catalytic converter (3 inch, 100 cells) is restricting the flow.
3. Maybe the boost controller is simply not good (AEM Tru-boost).

Log images can been seen below:

Boost Controller On:

100 cell 3" cat should be fine. Run up over 350bhp in volvos with those. Could be exhaust design or restrictions on the inlet side.

Is it really an issue?

Its not a big issue, just annoying me at the bhp level. Torque is ok with me.
I could build a test pipe without the cat, but i am wondering if its a boost controller issues. I know sometimes these cant hold the boost.

If you're building an F1 car certainly, but unless you wish your exhaust to outvalue your car it's not exactly a good option. Wink

Small update:
I am going to install a test pipe without cat to see if the issue of boost falling linearly at high boost target is caused by post-turbo back-pressure.

Can any of you direct me to a tuner i can consult with regarding my log runs

The disco potatoe should have no problems with boost.. Id be checking the boost solenoid.. Check the ground to it. A 3" 100 cell should not cause restriction at such low boost!

BTW, and if i have a 200 cell 3" cat? Will this cause restriction?

Depend on the size and body of the cat!

We made a test pipe with out the cat.
The boost stability was improved until 5600 rpm. it stayed flat on 1.1 bar. It began dropping again till red line and back to 0.9 bar of boost.
So the Cat is not the major issue. Probably the turbo is out of breath or the original wastegate actuator is not strong enough to hold high boost (wastegate creep).
I could change the actuator to a higher rating but i am interested in keeping the option of low boost.

What i could do, it to shorten the 3rd and 4th gears, to get more umphh. With the 1.07:1 ratio at 4th gear, the car would be 202kph@7200 rpm. its more than enough speed at 4th for me.

Youve got problems with the wastegate keeping boost mate, commonthing on the internal ones.
Swap it with an external one, ive got a TIAL one (they come with springs )

Very nice project!! let us know

Thanks mate.
External wastegate it quite a change and will need to remove the exhaust manifold for welding.
I can live with some lower boost, as long as i shorten the 3rd and 4th gear, to get more torque.

Heya and indeed once youve got it al fitted is not a 10 min job, but would solve your problems..

My friend ran an GT28RS on his ZX 328bhp and only had slight creep**sues in 5th gear @ almost topspeed, under that it was just fine.. did 389NM of torque if im correct.

Great project this one, but we need more pics!!!

also have a look into my project

Yup, most def i need to upload more pics!
Have you been talking to Pieter lately? I've tried contacting him with no success. Since i am interested it getting the speed sensor working and use the VEMS boost control per gear and rpm range option.
Which vems version do you use?

3.3 , its been a very long time since its has an update, since the car has been off the road for more then a year and a half
Theyve changed numbers : +31487-506045

I know he isnt the quickest on replying his emails Wink

and their site is still offline....

Ive spoken to him a few weeks ago, he said the first he is going to do is to upload the latest software since so many things have changed since the car was there for the last time ( could be 3 years ago)

Just drop him an email , or giving him a call on the above number, should work!

let me know

3.3 is the board version. I am more interested in the firmware version. I use 1.1.64 and in the VEMS forum, people are pushing me for upgrade. Especially because of idle control improvements and injector voltage compensation tables.

I dropped him and Steve mails several weeks ago. No reply yet. Thanks for the number.

Ah you should definatelly do a firmware update, mine is like 2 years old...

Pieter said that was the first thing hes going to do when i get there, is to do the firmware update, so many nice improvements have been made.

Are you mapping the VEMS yourself?

Yup,
I got the initial map from DP, but it was for atmospheric. I changed it to my turbo application.
When i got to the dyno, the operator said the ignition and fuel tuning was very accurate. We did only minor changes and looked for dets.
