I'm going with a mate to look at an '07 plate Passatt tomorrow because he wants a bit of advice. I've been doing some research for the last couple of hours and quite frankly it seems these engines (2.0 tdi) are basically shit. There is a list as long as my arm of faults and failures, some of which are terminal to the engine including oil pump failure. This is a concern for me too as I was hoping to get the A4 version with this engine.......are they really that bad? Dunno

+2...Mines done 114k and I reckon if you hid the mileage and let someone drive it they'd never think it had covered that many miles. Hasn't missed a beat in the 2 years I've owned it anyway (I bet it throws it's toys out the pram tomorrow, lol).

His other choice is a Mazda 6 so I might sway him towards that.

My dads 07 passat 1.9 tdi has done 65k and ive just had to replace the front shocks as they were p*ssing oil out. At least there not like the older passats with 4 wishbones on each side on the front.

at work weve had alot of problems with 2.0tdi turbos and throttle actuator. 1.9tdi is brilliant and also can be mapped to be just as powerful as 2.0l

It's the same old story you only see the negatives, I have an 07 passat done 160k and it's been faultless, the history printout also shows no major faults only general servicing items have ever been needed.

2.0 tdi 140, plus I love it, stevieput off here also has one.

1.9 tdis have their negatives too, like most cars/engines

Take it as you find it and make sure its been serviced and looked after like it should have

do not agree with the 1.9 tdis being bullet proof either, my 150 1.9 went bang at 42k miles

to be fair i was thinking more along the lines of the older 90's and 110's or what ever bhp they were. never had any experience with 150's

To be fair, any engine not looked after won't be reliable - unless your very lucky. My 1.9 pd passats just sailed through the200k mark and performs faultlessly. Correct oil and regular servicing keeps it happy.

Saying that though, my old xsara hdi 'aka hack' had done 283k with no history and no service while I owned is (70k worth of abuse - willed it to die! ) Still going too as AFAIK.

You cannot left foot brake in the thing's so that's reason enough for me to ignore them, The 1.9's use oil like a past-time, a couple of mates who have had Passat's told me this as one had the oil light come on before the first service,

Nobody would ever buy anything if they only listened to internet 'advice'. An '07 plate will be well clear of the oil pump failure, Google it to get the right info. Gti-6's are scary as f*ck because they snap belts relentlessly. Yet most of us own one with no history of snappage... Roll eyes

If it's been looked after, buy it. If you believe the horror stories, what's the point in ever buying any remotely recent engine design? Stick to the ancient indirect injection diesels all the time? Sod that.

For all the failures of these 2.0 tdi engines, how many worked perfectly, without fault, for years on end? A massive amount. By far, the majority. Who logs on to a new forum to say how consistantly reliable their car has been?

Do the right research and buy the right car. Some are shit; avoid them. Buy the right one and it'll be fine.

Absolutely + 1 big one.

As Carl has said I've got a 2.0 TDI Passat B6 estate. I read about possible engine problems etc etc etc. If you read the manual itll tell you that half a litre of oil per 500 miles is acceptable!! Ours didnt use any in between its anual service!

You've got to remember there are thousands upon thousands of these engines out there and the only ones you hear of are the ones that fail. Just make sure it's got fsh and you should be fine Smile

Yes mate, identical to yours, it's not technically mine as the ex took it as part of her settlement. It's only clean as that photo was taken at least a good year ago.

At least I know she is in something reliable and so is my daughter.Yes
