I see my car currently has 195,50,15 fitted both front and back.. But the standard size is the more expensive 195,55,15?

I have toyo proxie 4s on the front and goodyear eagle f1s on the back (bought it like this!)

Looking at camskill:
http://www.camskill.co.uk/m53b0s99p1667/TOYO_TYRES_CAR_TOYO_T1R_PROXES_TOYO_T1_R_-_195_50R15_82V_TL_

only £36 for 195,50 toyo proxies... £56.70 for them in 195, 55..

http://www.camskill.co.uk/m53b0s99p69262/MICHELIN_TYRES_CAR_MICHELIN_EXALTO2_PILOT_EXALTO_2_-_195_50R15_82H_TL_

£60 for PE2s in 195,50.... or £90 for them in 195,55..

also looked at advans.. then I thought i want them all round etc then I thought - But my front suspension is sitting to high/it would be a waste? Sad

What sort of difference in performance will the two offer? and in each size? smaller PE2 or larger toyo?

anything wrong with fitting 55 to front and 50 to back?

£180+ or £62+ or somewhere inbetween..?!?!

tbh the back doesn't mind swinging out possibly a bit too much sometimes - I know I provoke it but I'm wondering if to ditch the eagle f1s..

this probably sounds like a rant - any advice welcome

Thumbs up Big grin

You will find massis of information on tyre choice and profile if you search but to give you my thoughts/experience in the briefest of nutshells...

50 profile is both cheaper and gives you a stiffer side wall, thus more lateral tyre stability. Get 50's

Toyo Proxies are over-rated in my opinion. Overheat when worked hard on track (if thats your tipple)

PE2's are significantly better. Granted more expensive but worth the money.

All very true FWIW but in the interests of balance there are some downsides, which might or might not matter depending on individual circumstances.

The rolling diameter of 50 profile tyres is smaller than the 55, which means, according to the tyre calculator at http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html , the tyre revolves 889 times per mile for the 50 profile compared to 860 revolutions per mile for the stock 55 profile tyre.

What this means is if fitted with 50-profile tyres the speedo would over-read by 3%, meaning the car would be travelling another 2mph slower than the indicated speed at around 60mph (as speedos typically over-read by 3 - 5 mph with stock tyres it could mean the speedo could actually over-read by up to 5 - 7mph depending on a bunch of variables). The car would be effectively slightly lower geared and would have higher engine revs for the same speed resulting in slightly worse fuel economy offsetting the cheaper initial purchase price of the tyres over time. It will have slightly better acceleration though!

Of course if used as a track slag none of this matters, but if being used for a longer commute these might be factors to consider.

Having had PE2's on both my clio and a 6, they are an awesome Tyre, far better in a wider lower profile than in 195/55/50 though. Best tyres I have ever had in 195/55/50 are without a doubt BF Goodrich G force profiler 2's. If you can find these get some fitted, they are incredible Yes

I must say I changed my tyres from 50 profile to 55 and it made a huge difference to the balance of the car in corners, it was much more adjustable, predictable and enjoyable on the higher profile tyres.

Now, I don't know if this difference was due to switching to the profile that Pug originally specced for the car, or whether it was because I previously had different makes of tyre front and rear on the 50s, then consistent toyos all round on the 55s.

Just my experience there, but regardless of profile or tyre brand, I'd definitely recommend having the same tyre on all four corners to better experience how well-balanced the car can be.

It's a better drive with the 55 profile which is why that's the right size for the car. I know you want to find reasons to justify spending less but if you want to drive a gti then you're going to have to pay to run it properly....and it looks ridiculous with smaller tyres. All my opinion of course Thumbs up

I'm just throwing this out there ... has anyone tried the new Toyo R1R?? I'm planning on getting myself some PE2's to go with the new wheels as i only seem to read brilliant reviews of them. But the new toyos seem not bad either

I've done many thousands of miles on both profiles and with both Toyos and PE2s.

I can say that without any doubt 55 is superior and the Micheliins are in a different league to Toyos. Worth the extra money, skimping is a false economy.

Totally agree ... PE2's in 55's defy physics. Best combination for B road driving in the wet.
