Hello suspension experts...

Managed to get my Gaz Gold set-up onto the car a while back, but I am having some issues with them.

They come with cone shaped top hats that the springs sit nicely onto and these then sit into the bearing of the top mount, but on putting any pressure on the shock/spring the top mount bearings refuse to rotate?

Top mounts where new at the time of fitting. Springs are a 9inch 250lb variety (from what was written on them)

Do I need a different style of top hat for the springs?

Thanks!

sounds like you have the wrong top spring cup, the ones for standard bearings are just a ring not a cone.

Are they standard topmounts or Spoox-style camber ones?

The cone-shaped tops are for adjustable top mounts. I'd imagine they're similar to my KW ones:

The mount on the left is the equivalent of the conical ones, the ones on the spring are what you need for a standard topmount.

Standard top mounts is what I have currently, been doing some searches and emailed Gaz directly... no luck finding them yet.

Yeah I guess the one in the hand in the picture above is what I need.

Go to your local bearing shop, buy two needle bearing thrust washers with a 2.5" ID, stick them on the lower seats under the springs.

I'd love to be able to find that elusive local bearing shop... I'm almost positive they all ran away up north.

Good work, how much were they out of interest? Think mine were about £26 from KW.

No, not yet. Tried to get some info out of them but I got the response "We do lots of these kits they will be the right parts"

I'll post up the part numbers off the packaging when they arrive in the next couple of days.

Okay,

I have the part number for them... ready for it:

TOPCOLLAR

Anyway, all fitted. Is centre of the top mount supposed to move up and down that much... Never really noticed it before.

As in the centre of the top mount so the damper rod is moving it up a little when you lean on the car...

Sorry more questions...

Owain - from your picture you have a nut, washer, cup, top mount then straight onto the damper?

It is almost like my dampers are not compressing and push the centre of the top mount and the cup assembly up. They are pushing them up enough I think for it to touch the OMP strut brace I have.

Not sure what is going on here...

Yeah, standard top mounts are quite soft, it's to try to drop the damping rates in the first few mm of movement either way to help the ride quality over small bumps.

I guess I can remove some of the movement by placing a large washer over the top of the damper underneath the top mount, that should give it some more area to press against.

Still they feel a lot better since fitting the correct top cups.

They need some flex, that's how the top mounts allow the dampers to move orientation without having a spherical bearing up there.
