hopefully someone can offer some advice

picked up a rallye on tuesday, no signs of a leak etc, looked tidy, completed the 460 mile trip brough it home in the small hours. woke up this morning and everything seemed fine.

drove it to work and while i was there i decided to nip it to a recommended garage 1 minute walk away to have the wheel bearing changed as i just couldnt be bothered to do it myself. they did that no problem and i picked it up after work and drove it home. 2 hours later nipped to asda and back and pulling back up noticed a patch of oil on the floor where i was parked for the two hours earlier. set the car down level, came back 10 minutes later to find a few more drips. jacked the car up and there was a good covering of oil on most of the drivers side parts that was collecting and dripping from the bottom of the block, got some kitchen roll and cleaned it all off the block and waited a good 20 minutes but no more appeared.

Rolled the car somewhere clean and i have locked it up for the night.

first thing in the morning i will check the engine oil level, is there anyway of checking the gearbox oil level??

Main question is that if (and fingers crossed it is) the block is still clean in the morning and the engine oil level is fine, is there any way that in changing the wheel bearing they could have ended up disturbing the drive shaft causing a gearbox oil leak, and could i have driven with a leaky drive shaft and not known??

In my position, other than suicide or punching the pregnant mrs who is constantly repeating "you will keep buying these pieces of shit", what would be the next step for most people??

Might have pulled on the Drive Shaft slightly mate?? Causing it to leak, I did it once on my XR2 years ago

Maybe.

I have had similar recently, drops of oil shortly after driving. Turned out it was leaking from the oil filter, running down and being pushed back along the car as I was driving! Guess the seal had gone hard over time and not sealed properly. Quick swap over and top up with oil and seems ok so far! No more leaky bits!

if it was the o/s wheel bearing they changed, then no they couldn't of pulled it from the box

Can you smell the oil on the floor? ( i.e dip your finger in it ) as gearbox oil has a distinctive smell compaired to engine oil.

As Andy said if its the drivers side they aint pulled the shaft out.

didnt smell it and washed it off the drive so it didnt cause anymore corrosion on the tarmac

i have no idea where to look and how do i check where the oil is coming from?

if it was a big leak wouldnt it have emptied over the 500 miles in 24 hours??

You should be able to see any "wet" patches and follow them back to the source!?

If its not a lot then i guess it might be tricky!

I could see the oil running down the front of the block, put my hand down and felt around the filter and bingo!

Just have a quick look inside the cambelt cover, if the cam seals have gone, it'll probably be all over the belt etc etc. If dry, my moneys on the front main oil seal. Give it a good clean off with brake cleaner and leave it running till you can pin point it exactly.

If you can see some oil on the floor put your finger in it and give it a smell, if it makes your eyes water it will be gearbox oil and may be a drive shaft seal.

Otherwise if it has no real smell it will be engine oil, check the level on the dipstick, a oil leak always looks worse than it is.

If you go to the petrol station and drop a pennies worth on the four court it looks horrendous.

o/s driveshaft may have moved if the intermediate bearing wasn't held in place by the hockey sticks. Other than that it won't be gearbox oil leak.

just swiped my fingers on the remains of the first puddle and it does have a distinctive smell to it

**edit** washed my hands a couple of times and can still smell whatever oil it is on my fingers

how do i check gear box oil levels or is there no way?

Chances are the hockey sticks were forgotten and the shaft has been migrating out causing oil to leak from the differential.

As you've just mentioned, a funny smell normally indicates gearbox oil...
