driver side bearing

If this is the front drivers side, I have to agree with Chris:

o/s driveshaft may have moved if the intermediate bearing wasn't held in place by the hockey sticks. Other than that it won't be gearbox oil leak.

Chances are the hockey sticks were forgotten and the shaft has been migrating out causing oil to leak from the differential.

As you've just mentioned, a funny smell normally indicates gearbox oil...

so tomorrow morning i will check for a puddle of oil and check the engine level, if there is no puddle and no change to the levels i will clean off everything start it up and look for any signs of leakage, if there are no leaks from the engine i'll assume its gearbox oil.

if there is no way of checking the gearbox level what is the next option? should i get onto the garage that did the work to arange collection back to there place? it would be cheaper to get them to do the work if it turns out that this was the problem but if not i dont want it left with them as there work is obviously poop! recovery to carls is going to be over £100 and i dont want to go to another local garage i know nothing about

Have a look here. Its a servicing guide and shows the level plug on the end of the gearbox. However like its says the oil does not always flow from it when topping it up so checking the level may not happen. Drain and fill with the correct amount is the only way to be sure in that case ( imo! )

^^^ I agree with Mark. The only definite way to know how much oil is in the box is to drain and refill. Not an expensive or difficult job. And securing the shaft is a case of tightening 2 11mm nuts...

Hi Dan the right hand drive shaft was replaced last year as the middle bearing was squeaking. And I deffo did the little "hocky sticks" up when I refitted the new shaft. So I dont know what the garage did to that side when they did the bearing. But it sounds like they have f*cked the seal on that side of the box. As you said it wasn't leaking when you left here. And if it was by the size of the leak you have discribed you'd never have made it back.
I hope you get it sorted fella.

Why would you need recovery to Carls ? You can still drive it with an oil leak ?

Or Deepak is your man to get it sorted!!

The crank seal has been leaking since the day i bought it, seven years ago. But as its never made a blind bit of difference to the oil level i just never did anything about it. As for the Cam seal that will be the Twats that did the head work.

Thats my daily drive/Tow car. The next buy is going to be a MK Indy R1. That will give your shit box pug a run for its money. Wink Laugh my ass off
