What pressure should I expect on a hi compression engine (woosner pistons )
My guage measured over 290PSI on all cylinders. (nearly end stopping the meter!!) which the interweb tells me equates to around 14:1 !!!

Mine with je's (11.5:1) measured 225 psi.

Remember cams and cam timing effect your compression.

That's high as hell with 285's.

What does it read with a normal engine? Might just the tester is out a fair way.
My Tu on 10.8:1 with a road cam (advanced slightly) knocks about 230 across all 4 pots on my meter.

The ratio of volume in the cylinder with the piston at it lowest and highest points.

On a standard engine dry I saw between 190 and 205 psi, this was on my 111,000 mile old engine though but the bores looked good as new on strip down. Did you CC the combustion chambers and work out the volume of the piston intruder dome when you built it? I ended up wih around 12.7:1 using Wossner high comp pistons, saying that though a small amount of material was removed from the combustion chambers as they were reworked for better burn.

290 PSI is probably about right for that setup IMO.

The Wossner pistons are around 12.2:1, and as a rule of thumb you would expect to see 17-20 times the CR on a standard engine (say circa 240 PSI).

Given you’ve got longer duration / higher lift cams, you will have a higher volumetric efficiency, which will increase the cylinder filling ability further.

The fact you had no manifold, air filter attached when you did the test will also increase the results of a compression test as there’s no plenum to form a vacuum in around the ports on the cylinder head.
