hi all,
i have recently changed the radiator on my gti6 and it seems that a coolant pipe at the bottom has perished and snapped therefore the engine is over heating. also one of the radiator fans is not working. there still seems to be coolant left in the radiator and no clear sign the coolant is leakingt out of this broken pipe. attached is a picture. could anyone advise of where to get a new one from?

borris has attached the following image:

That broken pipe is an air con pipe.

The overheating is probably due to the fan not working.

    thankyou,
only one of the 2 fans are working. it overheats pritty quickly and there seems to be some mayo on the oil filler cap. it has been driven quite abit whilst over heating in other words its a long accuring problem i seem to be having. once it gets hot there is some blue ish smoke.

Both fans should operate at 2 different speeds when the car reaches 97 degrees and 100and something.

Otherwise, 1 fan will work independantly when the air con is on and the engine is below the 97 degree activation temp.

thankyou but this still does not explain why i have mayo on the inside of the oil filler cap. im thinking that i may have blown the headgasket.
it has been sitting for a while. im just trying to eliminate things to come to a conclusion.

Probably because you have continued to use the car with a faulty fan. It has overheated and the gasket is probably in the early stages of failing.

Do you do many short journeys? A small amount of mayo can be down to the condensation of short journeys.

No, when the air-con is on BOTH fans run at half speed.

i was used on fairly long journey when the problems started. remember i stated that it had a new rad fitted as well. since the new rad it has remained the same

Correct my mistake. I have a shitty bodged 6 here with a wire bridging the fan plug and 1 fan comes on when the air con is activated, or nothing will come on at all LOL

Would remain the same. The fact probably is your fans aren't working as they should, so you are not getting enough cold air to the rad and it is overheating

    Do some searches.

but the 1 fan does work but it is still over heating so could be a badly bled system?

    1 fan works, 1 doesn't.

Its a Peugeot. They wouldn't have put 2 if it didn't need it.

The rallye only has one fan iirc. However it sounds to me that you have faulty fans running (or not running as the case maybe) and has resulted in you cooking your engine through letting it overheat too many times. I hope its not but there are a couple of ways to test the condition of the headgasket

OP states he has a GTi6, not a rallye. So will have 2 fans, 1 not working currently.

I don't think there is any hope personally.

Both fans will come on together at 97 deg at half speed and then full speed at 107.

If one fan isn't working, then the one remaining good fan will come on ONLY at 107 deg, which isn't ideal and long-term this has probably blown the head gasket. Sad

    Stan.

Did you bleed the car fully after you changed the rad? If you put the fan to hot does the air blow really hot?

Although it's no longer available new, it's worth trying to get hold of a good example second-hand. As GTi's get tubbier and cooler, it's nice to remind yourself of why insurance companies hate hot-hatches so much.-Top Gear on the 6 Apr '01. Black 6

You dont "need" 2 fans. I have 1 on my 405 and it never goes over 90 when coasting or 95 at a stand still. Besides the fans shouldnt need to come on when car is coasting.
Is the rad hot at all when youre facing these issues?

I doubt its the exchanger, I dont have it and theres no real heat issues with oil or water.

Id say it could be thermostat or air in coolant circuit (could be getting air in there if exhaust is blowing past head gasket).

if its white cream colour its most likely head gasket if you clean it away and it comes stright back after few days then ull need a head gasket you can also do a cheaper option of getting a tester wich you put in coolant resivour with special fluid wich turns blue or green if its ure gasket away (sorry cant rember name for tester but me saying this might spark its name from someone else)

Does it still overheat while driving along? the fans shoundnt be needed when moving so if it does the fans arnt the cause of the problem (but obviously need to be fixed)
