Always a few threads about Renault Sports on here as they seem to be a kind of natural progression from a 6 these days, so thought I’d put a bit of info about mine on here in case anyone was interested in how they respond to tinkering …

Spec wise, I have spent a lot of money on maintenance as of late, not necessarily because it was broken, but because there is nothing worse than spending £200 on a track day to then break down after 30 minutes. As such, in March I spent good money on the following:

New cambelt/auxbelt/dephaser, PAS pump, alternator, Brembo HC discs, Goodridge brake lines, Dot 4 fluid, engine oil/filter, pollen/air/fuel filters, & finally the removal of the aircon with a Pure Motorsport aircon delete kit

Modifications wise, it’s a combination of things that I know have worked on my previous clios, along with a bit of trial & error on the suspension front (ie fitting of products then testing on trackdays). Result is a car that imho handles fantastically, pulls strongly & is most importantly. FUN Hyper

As it happens, the car was also back to back tested at Bedford a couple of weeks ago, just to see how it compared to another friends track prepped 172 cup:

Essentially, Ollie's car was apparently more stable overall, & quicker through the slower speed/tighter corners, whereas mine was a wee bit more edgy/rolly/tail happy & quicker through the faster stuff. Clearly my additional front camber is losing me grip in the slower stuff, but combined with the rear ARB, im getting more front grip/rear adjustability through the quicker stuff.

Speed wise, Ollie's pulled better from low down, but tailed off after 5.5k, whereas mine was a bit flat, then felt like it really pulled hard from 5k to the red line. Mods wise, we both have a JMS remap & V6 airbox/Pipercorss filter, but Ollie's benefits from matched inlets & a de-cat as well, which imho suggests that mine is still a little strangled, giving the impression that it really comes on song from 5k (5k kick, etc). With Ollie's inlets & de-cat allowing the car to breath better from low-down & smoothing out the power delivery.

FYI, tyres & brakes are the same, ie R888's @ 28psi hot, with CL pads, Brembo HC's & braided lines. In addition, both cars run Bimarco Futuras's, with similar levels of rear strippage, ie just the rear seats/parcel shelf.

Now for me, i find it really interesting how slightly different approaches to suspension/engine breathing setups make such a massive difference to the feel/drive of what is effectively, the same car. Two sides of the same coin so to speak.

For comparison, the handling setup is now very similar to a 106/306 in that there is quite a lot of on the limit throttle adjustability (LOOS), just with considerably more grip/speed being able to be taken through the corners. The Whiteline ARB removes the tendency for slight understeer in the Trophy on the limit, the result of very hard front Sachs/softish standard rear Trophy dampers. Steering wise, still nowhere as pure as the 306, but decent enough.

And now for the spec, & a few pictures Big grin

Espace V6 airbox with Pipercross filter
Pure Motorsport aircon delete kit (inc. lightweight alloy pulleys)
JMS 98 Ron remap (higher rpm limiter)
RS Inlets
BTB catback exhaust

15" Pro Race 3's with T1R's (road)
15" MK1 16v wheels with R888's (track)
Ferodo DS2500 front pads (road)
Carbon Lorraine RC5's (track)
Brembo HC front discs
Braided brake lines

Eibach Sportline springs
Eibach camber bolts (-2.8 degrees front, -1.8 rear)
Whiteline rear ARB (set to stiff)

2 x Bimarco Futura buckets / sidemounts
OMP subframes
OMP 4" 4 point harnesses
MSV ‘Caged’ bolt in half roll cage
'OMP' dished suede 350mm steering wheel
All seatbelts & ‘fluffy stuff’ removed from behind interior panels

And where it spends most of its time Wink

Not bad for a miley one …

Great read and great to see a car being used to it's full potential. As for the miles, it really shows what can be achieved when you look after a car properly Smile

An intersting read. I've always held an affection for hot Clios since my days with a Williams. Fine, exploitable tools!

Quick question - what PSI did you have cold in the 888's to achieve a hot 28?

Its about 23psi generally, although i keep checking/dropping them throughout the day to maintain the pressures.

Think 26psi cold prior to the warm up laps ended up being about 31psi hot after the 1st session! So they do heat up very quickly.

Thats with the GG/Medium compound btw Smile

Good write up. I miss my Trophy dearly! In standard form, it is still an absolute weapon on the track!

now thats how renault should of released the trophy in the first place! they are supposed to be proper track cars, alot of the people on the trophy forums just keep them locked up to keep the mileage down and polish them every other day

hats off to you

Civic surely, has a red Honda badge rather than a blue Ford one.

just wanted to say that i have come across some normal red 182's where the sellers were claiming they were trophys

but the biggest giveaway is the rear roof spoiler which is from the v6 clio and the grey turini wheels which may look the same as the normal clio sport wheels but these trophy turini wheels give a different offset

most special thing are the front dampers tho, so if you do buy a trophy make sure they have been serviced

another thing ive noticed about clios is that sometimes the drivers door doesnt hang properly from the factory causing the door to close to much if you know what i mean, causing it to hit and chip the roof, it was like this on my trophy, my mates 182 and ive also seen a clio campus like this too

when i chopped mine in the garage would only give normal 182 money and they thought it was just a normal 182, it wasnt until i clearly stated that trophys only came in red(the clio the garage brought up on autotrader was blue but they thought it was a trophy cause it was advertised in the usual ebay fashion "rare, trophy, 182 blah blah blah) and came with fancy bits

I would have through that the biggest giveaway would be that fact that the Trophy is the only ClioSport available in Capsicum Red Unsure

182 in Inferno Orange:

Quite a bit different to the faded pink that the Trophy tends to come in Love

Do the MK1 16v and R19 16v wheels fit onto the 182 without modification/spacers?

Yup. Bolt straight on, although the clio Mk1 'turbines' tend to do for quite decent money, hence the use of the disgusting facelift ones on mine - they go for about £50 for 4 ...
