I'd say the quality would make more of a difference than the viscosity, make sure it's a fully synth decent brand. Spend about £25 or more for 5 litres.

EDIT: That's £25 from Opie, not Halfords Wink

Proper 'Race Only' oil tends to be full of stuff that murders catalytic converters, and has very little in the way of detergents, waste of money on a road car, needs regular changing because of it.

^^There are more than enough decent oils out there now that can be used in both that the old 'race only' formulations are dying out anyway apart from a few specific uses.

I'd go for regular changes with a cheaper oil any day, I change mine every couple of trackdays and the colour of the oil coming out is worryingly different from the new oil coming in.

Do all you guys get your oil from opie then?

I could do with changing the stuff in goldie before the next trackday, just debating what stuff to use as its currently using the total quartz 7000 10w40 stuff but i'm thinking of going on to fully synth mobil 1 as mentioned above.

They're cheap, they know their stuff, they have offers on CONSTANTLY, and you get a discount for just saying you're on a car forum.

I think I use this stuff.

I would never get oil from anywhere else personally.

Bit of a revival here but did you buy the above and did it cope with the high temps of track days well?

I have used Opie a lot in th epast and always found them good.

I would'nt agree with that really. If it's too thin then the quality is immaterial, plus you may run into issues with the hydraulic tappets. The same goes for if it's too thick, you risk popping oil seals out and pressure issues. Correct weight and decent grade are of probably equal importance, but it really depends on the heat, the hotter it gets the more it thins out. If you can keep it at 75-80 degrees you can get away with thinner oil to start with, those pushing 120-130 degrees, well you need all the help you can get.

fit a oil cooler and buy quarts 7000 from citroen for now, its a very good oil, and the manufacturers spec for our cars

keep an eye on your temps and gauge where to go from there.

as davey says, if it runs hot then look at thicker oil Yes
