Long story short, I've finally had my tracking sorted after about a year and had them put on new track rod ends while they were there.

However on the way home, I noticed a knocking noise.

Assuming it was something to do with my new wishbones, roller bearings, balljoints etc I got it jacked up, couldn't find anything. Everything was good and tight, no play at all.

It wasn't until I got the wheels back on I realised the knock was from play in the steering rack. Called back the place who did the tracking, obviously the manager was on day off and no-one else could even look at it, but he did say he's never known changing a track rod to damage a steering rack.

So what's the deal? Is it knackered? Can it be adjusted? Does it need replacing? How hard is it to do?

I've been searching through but most people seem to get play in the column, not the wheels. Very annoying as I've got a trackday tomorrow and was looking forward to having the ultimate steering setup with my new roller bearings.

Cheers people.
O.

Sounds like they might be faulty too mate. or just not tightened properly.

Take it down to another garage and have them to look over it for you.

Oh titties, that's annoying. Quite possibly it was just on the way out and changing the ends has just finished it off.

I was going to go back to the garage, but they're never going to say "oh well must be us, we'll replace the entire rack for free".

Will have to live with it for now until I can get another one then. I believe the Xsara rack is the one to go for, fewer turns for full lock? In which case, is it just the VTS rack or any?

Subframe doesn't have to come off does it? We don't seem to have an FAQ, yet Wink

I think the subframe does have to come off to replace the rack.

you can do it without removing the subframe but it's very tight and likely to make you lose your temper. been there done it

so yes. remove subframe to avoid needing facial reconstruction for removing forehead wrinkles

are there any differences in TRE's on the models?

only thing i can think is if they've bent the steering rack removing the TRE's, which takes a fair bit but is possible

are the arms wound in aswell? or are they fixed? i seem to remember them spinning out on a rack i had - eg, they could be wound in a bit to counteract play (regardless of track rod end)

then again you'd notice massive play at 9-3 on the wheel and the track rod end itself is doing that job anyway. odd one

It is indeed, doesn't seem to make any sense.

New rack time I'd guess Sad

Hard to tell, both wheels will wobble side-to-side, so it's something rack-specific rather than to one TRE or rod.

Hard to tell, there's always been a little but I wouldn't call it play as such, just what you'd expect on a car like this.

Steering with the wheel doesn't cause it to knock though certainly.

You can't use a VTS rack without inhibiting the lock, remembers. Smile

I'm fitting a P2 VTS rack to my Rallye. Yes

You can get play in the tie-rods that go from rack to TRE. I have to change my passenger one as it had play in it during the MOT. there are a couple of threads on here for it.

Yeah remember seeing something about that, put the standard ram onto the VTS rack or something?

Don't forget there are inner track rod joints as well as the outer ones Thumbs up

Motaquip do these for about £15 each iirc, part of the track rod.

yep, theres the inner tie rods that connect directly to the rack and then the TRE's connect on to them.. I had to change one of mine a while back as it had play in it aswell. With the wheelks off the ground is there play in both wheels or just the one?

You need the phase 1 Vts rack, that's the quick 2.4 turns one, phase 2 Vts is similar to gti-6 I think,
very good mod though, you can take small/medium roundabouts without shuffling your hands like you have to do with the six rack,

TVR - Sorry mate, you said about tie rods which I assume are the actual bars, Welshy specifically mentioned that they have joints of some description.

Some how I couldn't see a rod going wrong, but a joint I could Yes

Wasn't ignoring you, sorry! LOL

Phase 1 eh? Cheers buddy Smile

They're listed as tie rods in the parts catalogue. They screw into the rack and the TRE screws on the end. Smile

Dave, you lot told me the xsara racks were both quicker! Where does the info actually come from regarding locks as I was told the VTS one was 2.6 on Phase 2? I broke a P2 for parts.
