Basically I bought a Gti6 with 141k and blown HG with plans to put my 74k engine (out of my written off diablo) thats had the HG cambelt etc done and also head replaced but as Im no mechanic, my mate(s) seemed keen to help me or so I thought till my mate did some research and told me it was too much work for me and him to undertake on our own and knowing my mates would not give up there time for free I decided it best to sell, now that is looking unlikely I had just as well 'Give it a GO'. Even though now it looks like i stand to lose my job in the new year!

Sorry for the rant but i felt it necessary to explain Blink

First and fore most Im not sure where to start should i remove the good enggine from the remains of my Diablo and put it to one side then get the duff engine out? Im certain I dont have most of the tools required to do this but a friend said I can borrow his If needed. Also being a 'Beginer' what would be the best method, split gear box and lift engine out or drop the lot out on the sub frame? I have access to an engine crane so thats one thing less to worry about.

Im way out of my depth really but I cant see me selling it. Huh?

I have just done my first 6 engine swap and tbh it is quite easy, take the front of the car off, bumper, headlamps, grille, slam panel and rads etc, undo the wiring multiplug on the passenger inner wing, remove battery and ecu to expose gearbox mount, drain gearbox and remove driveshafts, remove gear linkages, remove reverse lift up cable and clutch cable, undo lower engine mount, undo exhaust manifold to cat joint, take weight of engine on hoist, undo upper engine mount and gearbox mount, finally lift engine out complete with all manifolds and gearbox attached and wiring loomSmile ( I found it easier to turn the engine through 90degrees and push the car back but it depends on the hoist you have)

Then swap everything over to your replacement engine, make sure you label everything up if you are swapping the engine loom and take plenty of pics- trust me you will need them, then drop the lump back in Smile

Just take your time and you will be suprised just how easy it is Smile

Yea i think taking my time is key.

Will I need to remove the wheels/hubs etc to remove the d/shafts?

Did you use the loom from the car? I was thinking of using the loom on the good engine.

Pretty much as above although order doesn't matter as it all comes down to undoing the remaining 2 mounts to release the engine.

To add time wise it will take approximately 2-3 hours to get the engine out, maybe longer if you've no knowledge of what you're doing.

However as a first go I'd take the engine out of the donar car first as you will invaribly damage something first go, so best not to damage the 74k lump.

The Hubs can stay on just undo the driveshaft nuts, use any good loom that you know is ok

No just the wheels. After undoing the 35mm hub nut at the end of the D/S you just pull the hubs/brake disc out of the way and the D/S pops out from the centre of the hub.

You will need to remove the wheels to do it but can put them back on when the engine is out, no need to remove the hubs.

Dont forget the powersteering pipes and aircon pipes if you have it fitted, you dont want to ruin these as replacements can be expensive.

I would use the loom that is on the 74k engine as changing these is a right pain, you will need to swap Ecu's to the one from the car you are fixing so the immobilser works correctly.

Awesome i think that is everything covered for the time being.
I have already removed the battery/ecu box from the donor car so that something although pretty minor but never the less a step in the right direction. Good point Jon, I would like to keep my good engine in one peice. I am bound to damage something more likely my limbs rather than anything on the car Laugh

If I remove the air con Rad will that mean the gas going into the atmosphere or..? Dunno


Also would an old s/belt be strong enough to support the engine/box on a hoist as a mate said to use one? Just wondering if anyone on here has used a s/belt?

yes if the a/c rad is disconnected then will need a re-gas. it is possible to remove the engine without having to take the a/c apart.

seatbelt isnt ideal for a strap for lifting the engine but people do use them.

im only in devizes, for a days labour ill come over and give a hand. if you get the old engine out the diablo and make a start on the hg failure one should be able to get it running providing theres nothing missing

Seat belt will be fine to use to hoist engine out mate,thats how I do it all the time and yes aircon gas will escape providing the system is still charged.

Or you could unbolt the compressor and save the gas. It's illegal to just let it escape.

Yes that is what i was worried about. So removing the compressor I can keep all the pipework complete so when revoving the condensor i lose no gas Confused

Nah unless loads gets on you then you could get severe frost bite.

It's not really a big deal. Lets face it your car won't have any gas in it so I wouldn't worry.
