What a c*nt of a day! had the dash out within an hour, happy days i thought, but when i tried to remove the matrix it was a bit fiddly on the inside. So i figured i'd separate the hoses on the outside and wiggle it out that way.

Problem with that being I didn't realise how brittle they were and they snapped off without much force Blink

Oh and when i did finally get the matrix out i was shocked to see how bad it was in there, half the dash was covered in brown rusty silt!

Couldn't get any worse right? Wrong. Turns out the heater matrix I got was the Valeo one, different connectors so it was never gonna fit Dry

Meh, few days off the road and she'll be back once more, with a working heater now too yay!

I'll get pics up when i can be arsed of all the crap behind the dash

with the matrix pipes on the bulkhead, you did hold the little plastic clip across didn't you?

take it you have a/c hence the Valeo unit not fitting?

Yeah phase 1 with aircon.

I took off the metal spring clip and, following the guide, tried to wiggle the pipes off. A tiny left/right/left and one of the pipes sheared off Sad

With regards to the matrix, the pipes at the top sit at a different angle. The old one was just clipped to the bulkhead join too, the new one has two bolt holes in it. Was sold to me as suitable for GTI6 with aircon though annoyingly.

Thing is, been speaking to the guy i got the matrix off, he has two different types, but apparently both are connected to the bulkhead pipe with screws, whereas mine was clipped on.

Could there be a third type, or is there just one connection for all behr matrices?

Further to that, here's the state of everything behind the dash. Didn't expect it to be that bad! Think I must have got lucky and had a blockage stopping it from emptying all the coolant out Blink

Twice I've removed that pipe, twice I've broken it. Stupid design, crap materials.

Think it's because it sits right above the exhaust manifold so it goes brittle over time. Stupid f*ckers, manufacturers design cars to work, not for ease of fixing things 15 years down the line

Yeah that's exactly it, plus there's no way of pulling it out without putting real pressure on the 90 degree bend.

Rarely ends well.

I'd barely even started and it ended badly Dry

Was f*cking annoyed earlier though, was well on track to finishing in under 3 hours and that pipe split, and i noticed i had the wrong matrix.

Funny how a job can go from 3 hours to 5 days in the space of two seconds. Not.

I had the same problems in the spring. Done a post on my findings Smile

The heater matrix you need is: http://www.expresscarparts.co.uk can supply it p/n: P255183
Its £50 delivered and its not listed on the website. so you gotta phone them 01403241346 tell them its the part number and say its the behr style one....

See on the 1st pic of your matrix mine had a self tapper through the lonely hole just in front of the pipe connections on top of the matrix so that might be what he means by screw fixings but its not needed. And the new one I mentioned comes with the connection that goes through the bulk head too.

Good luck getting it back together
Razz

I had exactly the opposite problem. Bought a BEHR, turned out I needed a Valeo. See For Sale forum if you're interested.
