I'm running 200lb springs but apear to be too long at 9" i have them as low as possible but the springs keep banging together

I'm going to be changing to 6" springs

but don't know weather 6" springs 200lb and compressed about 1" would feel ok for road use or to go 300lb or is that too harsh?

is there a table to give an indication of
how harsh the ride is dependent on weight of 6 Vs ?lb of spring? Confused Geek

On a standard 306 GTi front corner weight is about 370kg ~ 800lb.
So 200lb spring will be compressed 4” with the car on the ground. This means that it is impossible to use 6in 200lb spring on the front. For 9” free length spring you have total travel of ~5.9”. This means that the suspension goes coil bound after only 1.9” of travel.

For 250lb springs: compression due to weight of the car 3.2”, 8” spring has total travel of ~5”, so again very little suspension travel.

In both cases the springs are too short for the weight of 306. If you want to keep the spring rate the same it would be necessary to go for longer springs and to make sure that when they are close to going coil bound the bump stops come in to play.

As for increasing spring rates – it depends on the kind of driving that you do and how well the dampers can cope. Standard front springs are only 110lb but have a lot of preload.

That's some helpful info cheers Wink

I'm after the car sitting at -45mm / -50mm
I don't drive like I stole it or anything but do sometimes run 17" wheels so just looking for something not too harsh but not have the spring going full travel on standard pot holey roads Dry

I was using 285 on the ASTs for road use although not sure on the length. Perfectly acceptable ride I thought but they were fairly well damped. Didn't bottom out once the rear damping was sorted and was sat at about -45mm

just fitted the 325lb 8 inch springs and now sits and rides perfectly compared to the 250lb. just need to lower the rear slightly and then set the ride height to give it a proper test.

new ride height is set to about 20mm lower than standard on the front but my coilovers could go alot lower theres still 3 ½ to 4 inch of threads left .only want to go-30mm all round for time being but need to sort rear axle out first.

will add some pictures next week but are lass has just took the 6 on holiday with her for the next week.

are your springs 2 ¼ id if so you can try my 8 inch 250lb ones if you like you might have more luck than me with them. think my problem was that my coilovers are designed for 30mm [avo]drop minimum and i had them set at about 15-20mm didnt want to run to low at the front until rear was sorted.

I know this is a few months old but wondering if anyone can help... I have cheap raceland coilies on my HDi (I kno I know, but they wear a gift so can't complain too much, plus IMHO there better than the Gmax Shox and springs I had on before them).

basically I want to change the main coil springs as it's far too compressed and goes coil bound to easily but don't know what spring rate to go for and if I should have longer springs and loose the helper??? here's some pics to help:

these pics are the car as it stands under its own weight:

Jacked up so the wheel no long touches the floor:

Have you tried the tie-wrap trick yet? Wink

Haha, you found me, I have a cable tie in my pocket now and will wrap it round a coil before I leave work, then I have a 50min drive home before I give you an answer.

from reading what Russian Guy wrote (post #3) it seems longer springs is a must. I just want it to hit the bump stops before going coil bound (which I'm sure is what its doing as the coils are marked top and bottom)

As you can see in the first pic of post #17 regardless of the spring there isn't much travel left in the shock itself and my car isn't as low as Mary_Aireys and DarrenjLobb and there on the same kit, I don't know how they manage. the top of the tyre isn't in the arch like some and there 55 profiles:

Darren's does suffer from massive lack of traction and compliance in his video's though, so maybe they're just putting up with it for the looks...
