sensor fault leading to bore wash, potentially damaged piston rings and bores.

just change the oil and filter and see how it goes.

thanks welshpug for quick reply, i changed the oil yeseterday and filter but no joy. the garage has said it could be the head gasket.. so he quoted me £400 for head gasket, pressure test and cambelt.
but is there more to my problem as fuel should never get in the oil should it?

no, though with the cost of replacing them in labour coupled with the fact that most XU10 iron blocks are worn too much to accept a new set of rings you might as well find another engine if someone else is doing the work.

Have you actually got any symptoms of a problem? Or just some mechanic trying to generate work for himself?

If any of the possible causes had happened, then you'd surely know about it!

(PS, please try to give your threads meaningful titles)

A replacement engine is likely to be £500-£600 fitted.

Contamination of the oil and overheating points to headgasket failure (NB, it's most likely not petrol getting into the oil, it's coolant). The tapping might suggest that it's got so hot that the head has warped (in which case, you may as well just swap the engine IMO).

If it's definitely petrol then it's the rings/bore damage. But i don't see how this can cause the other 2 symptoms Dunno

My car used to do a lot of small journeys which used to make the engine tap a bit more, get a tad warmer, the oil smell of petrol and used to use a bit of oil. It used to be always running on the choke pretty much 10minute journeys and a lazy arse Laugh

Thats when its due the oil changing, Once thats been done it doesnt use a drop and is quiet as a mouse, Sits on the drive more often thatn nothing nowadays though Laugh

yeah its definitly petrol in the oil it stinks, and it taps quite badly over 2k rpm. i think its safer to get a new engine fitted than just get the head gasket done, as that might not solve my problem. do you know anyone with a complete engine for sale, also would i be ok with my wiring and ecu or would that need replacing too? thanks im proper guted i loved my car just need to get it back on the road now :-(

Another GTi6 engine will drop straight in. Run with the same wiring and ECU.

I'd suggest a mechanic would charge you 8 hours or so.

Just change the oil and see what happens. Dont leave it as you will spin a bearing as the oil is fubered.

strip it down and have a look is probably the best way. head gasket will be cheaper than a new engine

wont need to do that, a compression test will tell what's up.

the garage said he would do the pressure test cambelt and head gasket set for £400
is it worth taking the risk with this but then i could find out after that it needs even more money spending if it needs a new engine?

i reckon you'd be better off getting a new engine, then selling the old one on to someone who knows how to fix them
