Im just trying to find out info if this is possible.

I know that the saxo has an electric PAS pump.

Would it be posible to use this on a GTI6, and then just run an aux belt to alternator and just tension it using an adjuster like how it works on the 1.4 which came without power steering?

I have seen a saxo pump used on a HDi off the Pug.net forum, will be getting some info off him hopefully too.

Thanks
John

Some of the SC guys use the electric pump so that they can keep their AC so yes it is possible Yes

Why would you want to use it?

Rich W can sell you a PSP relocating pack which will move it down to the location where the air con pump usually is located Yes

You can use the s16 engine mount and pas mount, you have to grind of the ac lugs on the sump!

The reason i want rid of the powersteering is so i dont have to go round the rallye tensioners route.

Went to the scrappy and the want £70 for the pump so i think i will just by the rallye set up.

These pumps can be had on ebay for around £40.
I fitted one to my 406 track car,and run a tiny v belt driven alternator (its got a GTI6 engine) Electric PAS is nice cos it can be switched off (run with it turned off most of the time.)
It is not quite powerfull enough for the large 406 variable assist rack, but is OK for the 6 rack.

I am definetly doing this conversion, managed to get a brand new saxo PAS pump for free, i just wondered; does anyone know the thread sizes for the pipes on a 306 steering rack (its a 1.6 rack), but i imagine thread sizes are the same for the lot. (yes, 'imagine' isnt a good choice of words, i know!). So, anyone know the thread sizes so i can get some custom PAS pipes made?

Cheers,
Sam

I'm not sure if that will work though because the placement of the rack is pretty different on the saxo; its mounted half way up the bulkhead whereas the 306 is down on the subframe. Not a bad idea though, ill have to look into if i can mount the pump elsewhere to account for this. Cheers.

easy enough to get the pipes to fit, take the appropriate ends to a hydraulics specialist and have some hoses made up.

you do need to use the last few inches of the steel pipes due to the routing.

the pump can go pretty much anywhere as all they need is a fat power feed and a relay with a switched live, you can either have it on a switch or a simple splice off the Injection double relay so it only runs with the fuel pump.

I have seen it under the boot floor, on the bulkhead behind the battery tray, on the battery tray, even inside the car.

Cheers welshpug, that was my original intention, but i had thought about just getting entirely new pipes made up, hence my need for the thread sizes; to minimise time off the road. But i think ill be better off just taking them down as you say and taking a week off work.

they are not a hydraulic industry standard, hence the need to re-use the original fittings.

As welshpug says, use the original ends and leave about 6 inches of pipe. Then get a length of flexi pipe made up that connected onto the short steel pipes ( think they were 10mm but can't remember.
The return is low pressure so you can make your own pipe up.
I mounted the pump on the inner wing.

That was my original intention, but as i say i was trying to minimise off the road time. I suppose i could just scavenge some duplicates of my current PAS pipes and some saxo ones from a breakers and achieve the same result of minimum time off road by chopping those instead of mine. Plus then i would have the originals if at some point i decided to return to the belt driven set up (f*ck knows why but you never know!). Anyways, heres a question for you Welshpug, since we are in a similar area, know any good hydraulic specialists or is it just Pirtek? Thanks in advance.
Sam

yeah that would be a good approach, get some bits of pipe from a scrapyard off any XU engined 306.

Seeing as you're in Brecon find any farm supplies type places that fix tractors etc, they'll either do or know where to get pipes made up.

Good thinking, theres a hundred and one tractor garages around here, not sure how i missed that idea. Cheers for your help, and if ever you need a spot of discount on main dealer bits, pop into merthyr citroen (as long as its not my day off!)

Sam.
