Not too tricky once you got the hang of it, and dont mind the garage looking like a failed chemistry experiment.

The kits one from Gateros Plating, about £80 from memory. You need 4 x 5litre chemical proof containers, one contains the zinc plating mix that you dangle 3 interconnected zinc annodes in, next is the clear passivate tank, then the last is the yellow passivate mix. Chuck a battery charger into the mix and an acid dip tank and thats about it.

Plus you need something to de-rust all the bolts - i use Bilt Hamber Deox-c in an old bucket.

To plate about 12 bolts, takes about an hour from start to finish, force dry them with a hot air gun and leave overnight and thats it.

Like we said I reckon the Deox C de-rusting makes the biggest differenceWink

If you take them to a platers I reckon they don't spend long enough de-rusting/acid dipping themAngry

You're right Kevin, speed is of the essence when plating these things, once soaked in deox-c for however long, they get acid dipped for 10 mins, rinsed in water and ive found unless you get them in the plating solution within a couple of mins, they start oxidising like you wouldnt believe!! Its mad. Almost before your eyes.

Cheers for the comments. Aint done too much today as ive been fitting 2 big spot lights to the greenlaning toy!

Keep it up fella, it's a good read.

Not done much this week, been busy with the house/kids/work etc.

Have cleaned and painted the block, and been fiddling with the all the odd little bolts and fixings - like this.

Little water jacket blanking plate on the flywheel end of the block.

Taken off and laid out.

Soaked ovenight in Deox-c, acid dipped and plated.

Then re-fitted to the painted block.

Refinished my spare pair of cam covers in crackle red - will be put into storage for the future.

Hopefully get the bottom end re-assembled one night next week and make a start on the rest of the engine and bay.

Got loads of bits in plating at the moment, just need to find a new bottom crank pulley as mine looks manky. I suspect another trip to Pug is due in the week.

I call you lots of things Kev, some of them nice even!

I hear you, are they about the £80 mark or so? Ive plated all the crank pulley bolt as well this afternoon, as well as removing the rear engine mount bush from the bracket.

Update time.

Got the engine built up last night, using a set of Heavy duty bearings in the mains and big ends, new thrust washers, all from Rich_W @ Lynx. (excellent service by the way RichThumbs up )

Fitted the painted sump back on, then fitted the front and rear main oil seals (genuine pug of course.)

Waited till this evening before turning the bottom end over and trial fitting the water pipe and lower engine mount.

Don't be put off by the shitty crank pulley, i'm going to replace it with a solid alloy one off Rich_W in the new year.

The water pump and tensioners will be replaced with new pug items as well in due course.

Also had a fiddle with the headlights, as they were out of the car.

Before and after "black masking".

Genuine Valeo Crystal headlights and I can confirm they are a pig to do.

Got some new Rallye blanks for the front bumper as well.Thumbs up

Next job is to finish stripping the engine bay out, hopefully over the xmas break.

Cheers Kev.

Had a good look round the bay last night, apart from some minor surface grot on the crossmember and some corroded bolts on the ABS pump bracket, it all looks good. None of the more severe corrosion we've seen on some cars.

Will be painted and lacqured up in lovely Astor Gey anyway.

Presume x-member will be removed and powdercoated to keep up with your standardYes

By crossmember i mean the panel thats welded between the two lower inner wings. It'll be mechanically stripped, deox gel'd then treated and painted.

Its a bit shit that Pug only lacquer the top of the strut towers and flick it down towards the front panel. Better than ford i suppose who used a different colour under the bonnet of Mk6 RS's making them look like ringers from new FFS!

Finally got a couple of hours this morning to have a dabble on the car. First task was to get the bumper off, and inner arch trims out of the way. Then i drained the engine oil, gearbox oil, coolant. The upper front panel is held on with 4 bolts and once removed it looks like this..

I was pleased to find the front panel rot free, and it will be taken for powder coating over the next few weeks, question is, do it satin black or gloss black??

With the radiator and fans out of the way the inner front wings look like this..

Dusty but no corrosion. No laquer either, just flat Astor Grey.

Plan is to flat and paint these areas then laquer up nice and shiny.

Only crusty bit was the bolt on battery support,

Pure surface corrosion which all came off with the DA sander. Etch primed and painted up satin black already. Bolts will be de-rusted and zinc plated.

How it's looking now.

Next job is to remove the drive shafts, exhaust and gear linkages, clutch cable, and other pipework and the engine / box is ready to come out.

Im pleased how (almost)rust free the front end is, however it will be cleaned up and treated to keep it tidy for the future.
