Just read this whole thread, loved it! Love your attitude toward the car and the way you try anything yourself. Sorry for the partial revive, but I had nothing better to do Smile

Heh no worries - it was about due a revival anyway Wink

It's not a foolproof method and there are countless things I've spent hours on for no real benefit, but it's been strangely enjoyable despite the pain...

Got spare holiday to use up before the new tax year? No problem, fit some harnesses.

Had to get some longer bolts from the friendly bolt man down the road, but really quite self explanatory. Lovely cheapo unbranded harnesses from Chris Harris...

...can be transformed into expensive-looking Sabelt wonders for the very reasonable price of £12.

Next up, time to sort the centre console. Frickin pain in the ass this was, trying to figure out which wires to what. Still haven't gotten the rear fog working, and managed to blow a fuse trying. Still, make a couple of holes and some self-tappers will hold the board in nicely.

Looking better already. First up I attacked the fan control. This was actually easier than I thought as the speed control is actually done elsewhere (not inside the box with the controls) so all I needed was a standard rotary switch. I'll post up all the wiring diagrams when I've gotten them all finalised and working, but essentially one is the feed, and the rest go off through various resistors somewhere to limit the current. Heatshrink to try and avoid dashboard fires:

And a shiny new knob.

I've also got a toggle switch which will do the rear fog (and an LED) and a pushbutton (again with LED) for the rear heater.

Rear heater's all in and working, rear fog I'm still struggling with. Incidentally if you need to find something to make a hole the right size for a Maplin push switch, the nozzle from a Machine Mart grease gun is exactly the right size, just push it on through.

Dodgy wobbly bent holesaw for the oil temp guage, and that sounds like an excuse for a bad picture.

Waddya know, it's beer o'clock.

rear fog, you need to rewire, i've done it cos the p1 has a different method. ie it picks up the live from the front fogs Yes i'll find out what i did if you want

God damn! Knew it'd be something like that! Yeah mate if you can, that'd be a big help. I wondered why it didn't seem to make any sense.

I'll be removing the fronts, hence I haven't bothered rewiring them.

In case anyone's interested I actually went back in time and hypnotised Rikky into doing everything I was planning on doing, just a couple of years before.

This way, he can fault-find everything for me prior to the issue occurring.

Actually while we're transplanting your life into mine - what did you do with the hazards? I could not figure out for the life of me how the switch is wired.

Had a nasty feeling it might, it seems to short the four indicators together, but only when turned on.

Basic, but I guess it works when you can custom-design your own switches. Those of us at the mercy of Maplin don't really have that luxury.

Dig it out and you shall be praised and rewarded*

*you will probably just be praised

Can that rotary switch take that kind of current? I've had one apart bfore and the contacts are tiny, the huge wires you have welded onto the back suggest a big load to me, you could still have your dashboard fire yet! Big grin

It reckons 5A, which should be fine. If it's not, I'll finally get my worth out of the fire extinguisher Yes

A pair of diodes infact!

Iirc, there are something like 8 wires going to the hazard switch as standard and you need to try to get that down to about 3.
Also, the indicators will work when the ignition is off after modifying this, but its no real issue.

I think the wires are:

Perm live
ign live
ground
left indicators
right indicators
illumination

and, erm, I forgot what else!

yeah that's one of mien aswell (only me likely to own up to these stupid wiring issues Laugh)

a lot of my pics are missing but i think it was just diagrams of the haynes wiring block for the switch

read right thru to the end though, because kev's 106 switch was slightly different to the 306, and when i wired it, i think the indicator kept staying on. kev's last post in the thread explains why
