Hi all, sorry if wrong section but i was just wondering if anyone knew how much i could expect an official peugeot garage to charge me for....

hooking up my pug to their diagnostic machine and possibly changing the lambda sensor?

Just wanted to know if its worth going to them or not...would they charge for the diagnostic machine usage or just the part and labour time to fit it?

Yeah cos im pretty sure the lambda is buggered, getting very poor fuel economy and that management light on the dash...its not a 6 either, only a 1.8 meridian.. :/

They will charge for diagnostics Yes

Some garages my waive this if you then have repair work done by them but they'll sadly be in the minority.

Dont go direct to peugeot you will pay a high premium.

Most independant garages can do the same diagnoses for half the cost.Big grin

There is a really cheap and good mechanic i normally use who would do it but he needed a software upgrade before xmas (may have it now) but has a really long waiting list usually to get my car in...

There is another reasonable gargage but the guy just says 'leave your car with me and il let you know' and tbh, i need it done pronto and i need the car everyday for work purposes, i dont have a day i can just leave it with him to see if he might fix it maybe....

I need a place that can do it in and out in a couple of hours really....there is a pug garage right up the road..

Well if you already think it's the Lambda, and given they'll charge for diag testing, sure it'd just be cheaper to buy a new lambda and try it!?

You'll have to change the lambda at some point in the next couple of years anyway. I'd just buy one and change it if you think its a possible problem.

dont you need a diag machine to clear the error code from the ecu though?
a small reason that i want it cleared is that when i come to sell it i dont want the engine management light coming up anymore as it looks bad! Its guna be a high miler as it is...19K in 9 months Sad

Not sure if the error codes will go if you disconnect the battery, i would have thought they are written to a non volitile memory? My Peugeot dealership did me a free diag and I never have my car worked on by them, however I have bought a fair few bits from them over the last 20 years! You could try asking the dealer whether they could check whether its the lambda so you can buy the part from them, the diag is a very quick simple job they can do from a laptop, it all depends if you get the right person there I suppose.

It will be a bugger if you haven't got access to a ramp or a jack and axle stands, you might be better off getting a local indy to do it.

Yes, I've always swapped mine over when changing between cat and decat pipes. I remove the pipe with the sensor attached then put the hex of the sensor nut in a vice on the bench then use the fulcrum of the downpipe to undo against the sensor, works a treat and never struggled.

Perhaps I'm just lucky but I've removed two old lamda sensors from two different but equally old cats and both came out with ease.

Lambda sensors don't often show up on diagnostics on these, i'm not sure about the 1.8 XU7JP4 engine, I guess it depends what management it uses.

Diagnostics could well be a waste of time - I would take a chance on a sensor.

Given the OP said he has an EML come on then this should define one sensor at least.

Its the 16v version of the 1.8 so im pretty sure it will come up on the diagnostics, my normal mechanic said he can hook into it but needs a software update to determine which part is giving the error code.

First got the car in May last year when the EML never came on then it came on intermittently and progressively all the time over the last 9 months, have noticed the mpg go down considerably in that time, but id rather get it hooked up to get a cert answer as from reading many posts on this site it could be a number of things....
Want to spend as little as poss getting it fixed so will prob just wait till next tues when my guy should have this upgrade and since im pretty snowed in at the mo, can stick with it!

From what I've seen (on the 6 engine anyway) plenty of faults will register without triggering the warning light. However, I think the ones that won't disappear with a simple ECU reset are registered as "permanent fault" and require a diag machine to clear them
