Hello,

For the last year (and a bit) I’ve been working with a friend (Adrian) on modifying my 306 to become a track car. As part of my new years resolutions I have vowed to keep an updated thread on this forum (let see how long it lasts).

As it has already been a year and the car is nowhere near finished it will certainly not be the fastest build on here – lol. This is our first time so go easy on us.

Bit about the car:
1997 306 Gti-6 Phase 2 – blaze
I found the car on ebay (first car I have bought on there) at a good price considering the relatively low mileage and bodywork being in good condition.

1st jobs where to remove excess weight, so out came the interior, some wiring & the sun roof.




Removing the sound proofing tar under the carpets (I think we just moved the tar from the car onto ourselves);

(I wish the build actually went this quick)
At this point we sent the car away to a local garage who specialise in rally preparing cars to have a role cage fitted – OMP cage (only thing so far that we have not done ourselves).

While it was away we started to modify the dash (cutting bits off, reducing wiring, adding kill switch + other buttons, making it look pretty(ish) )

quality - i want to do a full strip out at some point. do you have any experience doing it? i do not fancy cutting any wiring out! and i am dreading taking the dash out. What did you use to create the new centre console where the kill switch it? are you going to get it sprayed inside? Dan

Time to remove the engine and strip all the remaining pars off the car (hope I can remember where they all go).

Very good progress there, am liking it Smile

How much weight do you reckon was saved by removing hte stuff out of the back. I am thinking of doing this to mine after winter to save some weight, a add a half cage as well. Will also mean I dont have to come up with an excuse not to be a taxi service for all the freeloaders who ask for lifts from work, lol

im deffinatly keeping an eye on this , what a great car . mine is also compleatly stripped and im gettign a omp cage. im a fully qualified sparky and i wouldnt wnat to mess about with those french electrics haha fair play too you keep up the good work

I weighed most of the bits when I removed them from the car, but I did split the weight of the seats front and rear

By far the worst job so far has been cleaning under the car (ie removing the old protective coat). This area was cleaned to bare metal where possible and then coated with red oxide:



As it is going to spend its life outside I am also going to give it a coat of waxoyl (I know adding weight after all that hard work)

The battery box was then relocated to the boot (nice and low) , the role cage painted black and the car prepped for painting:





Fitting bonnet catches and starting to debadge:

how long did it take to do the underside of the car. this is somethign i need to do as mine is fooked. what made you do what you have done with the battery never seen that done before. will it be safe???

What will you be coating the underside in?
I know the pain your going through stripping it, I did just the uderside of the boot floor and took for ever

I imagine he wanted some weight at the rear and also to keep his centre of gravity as low as possible. And the box looks plenty strong enough to me, well done, Should be fun when she's finished. Any plans for the engine as its out or are you keeping the budget sensible?

It took about a month to do the underside of the car

I have given it a coat of Waxoyl

By the way, if you have'nt already done it, now is the time to reinforce the drivers side engine mount cup. Weld a good sized 4mm thick plate with a hole in it over the original hole to stop the cracking. If you feel really keen, weld a 25x25x3mm thick plate to the two points where the rubber pads touch the sides, instant engine mont chock mod! No more driveline shunt, and no more cracking.Cool

I am planning keeping the engine pretty standard probably use a lightened flywheel, induction kit and that

yer i was thinkin abotu gettign on done when i get my cage in as its best for your harnesses to be mounted at shoulder hieght rather then down to the floor. but will have to see what people think at the time.how much of a bas**rd was it to do the dash mate?

I can weld a harness bar with eylets properly welded into it if you like mate. Or you can lose the catches off the straps and just wrap the strap aroind the bar itself, either way works fine. That way you can get the harnesses as close to horizontal as possible. Drop me a PM if you want it done. Wink

cheers jim, idealy i would like a bar welded in like thsi on and then get the harness to go onto the bar without using a toggle or hook of any kind. how do they do it? do they get sowed?

No, they are looped around a sort of belt buckle so no sewing is required. Mine came with catches at first as I had eylets to start with, when I got my propper cage later on, I unlooped the catches and used the straps on the harness bar. Very simple.
