my mrs has just come home in the 6 and it now sounds like a bag of bolts.

She says it was making a loud noise from the front o/s suspension when reversing (like a loud hum) the battery light then flickered on and the power steering seemed to die, she then parked and left the car.
On the way home she says it seems to have no power in the first 3 gears and is making a hissing noise.

I have just had a look and slightly revving it in nuetral it does seem to hiss and induction noise it alot less than usual, the engine also seems to be tapping

any ideas anyone? i'm just hoping it isn't a slipped belt

and also i need to get it to carl's, would it be safe to do 30 miles in it?

sounds like aux belt's gone. that would explain the noise coming from the OSF, the battery light and the loss of steering assistance.

Sounds to me your not sure what your doing if you cant diagnose any of the above - no offenceWhistle

Get it picked up and looked at like the others have said mate, might be the difference between fixing a few minor problems or dealing with a catastrophic failureUnsure

right then,

bottom pulley has twisted and split so aux belt was loose hence the loss of power steering and the battery dieing, it has also chucked part of the rubber from the pulley into the cambelt and it had slipped a tooth Sad

carl has had a good look at it and timed it back up, and luckily says that it is running well Smile

so i am now ordering a rich_w alloy crank pulley and it will be having a new cambelt as a precaution and hopefully all will be well again
