I think the standard head chamber volumes are around 38cc in the head alone.

Jim - I wrote an Excel spread-sheet for calculating compression ratios on this engine for when I was building my engine [and others].

If you want I could pop over one eveing, could plug your figures in?

I may end up having to mill some material off the tops of the pistons to get the chamber volume back something like right.

Well if thats the case I need to find about 4-5 more ccs, and the head has'nt even been skimmed yet! Crazy

get the bowls worked is the best option as you dont really want to be machining them pistons or adding spacer plates. I surpose you could take a tiny bit off the top of the piston, but would probably wreck the squish area and design of them. just get the bowls opened up slightly.

I don't think shaving a few mm off the tops of the pistons will make an awful lot of difference to the burn rate, they have a large rectangular flat section in the centre, I would just take some material from the top of that if necessary. First things first though, I've got to go over all the measurents again and make sure I have'nt gone drasticly wrong as thie figures are a long way from where the piston manufacturer says they should be.

37.5cc iirc sandy said, 36cc with a max skim of 0.25, more can be removed but its not sensible to do so as you get close to the valve seats.

1.2mm gasket as mentioned, repair gasket is 1.4mm.

I definitely don't want to remove anymore than is absolutely necessary from the head, I have a horrible feeling I'm going to have too much compression as it is...

Update from Guy Croft today, my valve guides are made and inserted, work can now begin on valve seats and the valves themselves.

Here are some pics. (For some reason he thinks its an S16, but I have'nt had the heart to correct him!)

Starting to get excited about bolting this back together now...

Got my oil pump rebuild kit from Rich W yesterday too, so next week the block will be %100 finished. Good times Smile

Looks like I'm going to end up with a CR more like 13:1 but I'm told this won't be an issue as long as it's mapped very prescisely and I stick to high octane fuel.

No idea as I have'nt seen a bill yet, I got a piston, a gasket and a spring, plus a new drive chain.

39.6cc is the chamber volume I have ended up with, so it looks like I won't have a CR that is too mental after all, that's a relief! (Thats before skimming, but that won't change it by much)

its had some material taken from the chamber then, 37.5 IIRC is standard, down to 36cc if skimmed 0.25mm, much more and you get rather close to the valve seats.

when is it all going together?

Yeah, by me, I de-burred it, got rid of anything sharp and gave the casting marks a little cleanup and de-coke. Guess a little material removal translates to a fair sized change in volume in a chamber that size.
