last night my poorly agean blue gti6 died, driving along at 40ish it lost all power, after 3 hours of waiting at -4c (nice one rac) i've discovered the teeth have come off the cambelt at the bottom pulley (only done 30k since last belt change), this is gonna take some head work no doubt, but there is a possibility I've got away with it, has any one else had this problem? did you get away with it? if not, is it cheaper to rebuild or get a recon head, engines only done 70k so would rather keep it then replace with an ebay whole engine, bloody french cars are a pain in the arse, but its wicked fun!

depends how mechanically mided you are, if you have the skill to swap and engine over then yes buy a used engine and swap em over. Your car will have bent valves

Best off lookin in their first to be honest, I would have presumed you have bent valves.

i'd check how much it is to get it fixed. can't be much more than another head i think. plus you have the advantage of keeping the original head that came with the car!

indeed! I thought it would just be a case of replacing valves, guides etc, ie any thing damaged, but everyone just says replace head, replace engine, i agree dude, i'de rather keep the head and replace wots f*cked, i thought there might be some mystical mechanical voodoo reason why i cant, but surly a pressure test of the head and some new guts should do the job.?

Certainly will, make sure the guides are all undamaged (they are normally ok) and check EVERY VALVE, by removing them and spinning them up in a drill. Any suspect ones replace, even if they have the slightest of wobbles.

Lap in the new valves and you should be good to go. Smile

Stan.

have to agree with stan here. make sure of every valve and guide, take no chances! also replace with original peugeot bits as i've heard some horror stories when pattern parts were used...Whistle

Repace them all and bang it back together! Or If I were you I would send it away and have it rebuild ported and polish the put it back on for about 400 returned you can get yourself head ready done from a place near birmingham I see if I can find it for you.

Even if it is a tapper, you should get some compression unless you've holed the pistons etc.

Still havn't done it, just tryin to put the cash together! she will live again! its been opened up and all the valves are Very bent (exactly like welshpugs pic infact!) all the pistons are marked up wher the valves hit, most of them are allright, one could really be changed as its mashed in the valve clearnce bit, so will prob' change the lot, would like to have it all lightened and balanced, but on a minimal bugetSad
gonna swap the head for a recon and do a few other bits to the car while its off road (bushes, brakes, needs 2 tires, drivers window mechanism, tidy up some paint work etc) will post some pics wen i work out how!
cheers Smile

also, looks like something got wedged between the bottom pulley and the lip along the bottom of the block, the pulley is a two part with a rubber 'damper' between the two parts, this pulley has rotated a bit disaligning it with the TDC lock off holes. but whatever happened down there has gotta be the cause of the belt loosing some teeth

She' alive! and feels so quick! i love my 6! in the end we got a second hand engine from a xsara, swapped some sensors, went together nicley, very few problems, thought the clutch might be differant with the xsara being a 5 speed but it was identical, which was nice. needed a new aircon pump, got one for 40 from 306CITY which turns out is a couple of villages away from me, nice chap, specialises in 306's and has a couple of gti6's breaking.
