You torque the head down when you fit it. Blink

Did you do a complete rebuild or just drop a new engine in?

Its very rare now for any engine to need to go back to have the head re-torqued down. Once its fitted that is it.
So unless its specified in the tightening sequence dont worry about it, the GTi6 engine doesnt require it.

Yes Provided you torqued it correctly to begin with, nothing to worry about.

if you wanna check the torque, use 10kgf.m

the std torque (3.5 - 7 - 160º) is superior to this value

In Newton Metres, according to the datasheet:

Stage 1: 35Nm
Stage 2: 70Nm
Stage 3: Angle Tighten 180 Degrees

Stage 3 is 160 degrees according to Autodata but I think this is too much.

I also agree with you here Fletch, when I do them I only angle tighten to 90 degrees, as the bolts feel like they are going to snap if you give it anymore than this. Yes

no neeeeed! if they're done properly you wont need to touch them ever Wink

only tightening a bolt to 90 is a bit stupid when the book says 180...

You can't check the torque of the cylinder head bolts once they have gone through the three stage tightening sequence. The last stage is the stretch stage of the bolts which is measured by degrees.

I'd leave them alone. If the job was done properly you have nothing to worry about :-)

I angle tightened mine the best part of 160 deg. despite Longmans advice Laugh

Had to use a MASSIVE bar to get them that tight Laugh

And when I had to take the head off I snapped numerous extensions trying to undo them Doh

Will teach me for buying Fisher Price tools though! A Snapon extension did the trick.

I dunno if 160 deg. is too tight or not Dunno

The bolts did feel like they were about to go Unsure

Having said that I've had no HG problems, despite the copious amounts of boost! Big grin

.. touches wood…

They should feel like they're about to go, they're being stretched past yeild

Even the TU ones do the same when tightened properly, it's a weetabix day.
That's why you don't have to go back and retorque them like the head bolts of old.

P.S. - If your worried about the amount of torque try a little moly-based CV boot grease on the threads, it'll make it a lot easier, don't torque them up quite as much in the initial stages though,

Sorry to bump up an old thread but how the hell are you supposed to hold the engine still (assuming its out of the car and on the garage floor) whilst doing the final 160 degree tightening?

3 man job?

What do people using ARP head studs torque to? As they definitely are'nt stretch studs.
