Yeah I put my money on the roller too, had the same thing on mine.

If it doesn't whine when just revving it I would be more inclined to suggest it was a wheel bearing/cv joint/gearbox problem.

i will top the oil up and then see if it still makes the noise,

Holy thread resurrection Batman...

Right then as the guys say remove the aux belt to see if its that. If it isn't then i'd put money on a cambelt tensioner going (had that before - sounded like a supercharger). Oh guess it could be the PAS pump, alternator or aircon pump bearings too. Check the PAS fluid level too as that lubricates the PAS pump (again had that before).

If it only does it in gear then its going to be the gearbox.

have you had a recent timing belt maybe its to tight ???
