yes, the part numbers cross reference across XU XUD AND DW.

XU too? Isn't the GTI6 starter a different one than the diesel starters?

the gti6 one specifically is different, however the physical fit is the same.

diesel starters tend to be geared not direct drive in my experience, so the applied torque is higher.

I think some line up differently with the flywheel so may only engage on half so strips the teeth
