Summary of what's wrong with the race car currently:

  • Originally dynoed at 180bhp @ the hubs
  • Seemed down on power during the year
  • One year later dynoed at 155bhp @ the hubs
  • Started getting overheating issues so changed thermostat
  • Next race overheated to around 104 degrees for about 20 mins
  • Transition from no throttle to minimal throttle became very aggressive
  • Lots of build up on the spark plugs so felt like it was overfuelling
  • Compression ratio was 13.4, 10.8, 12.0, 11.0 so not ideal

  • Took the head off and had it skimmed (12 thousandths), head height is 136.1
  • Put it all back together, lapping in new valves etc. as best I can (not done it before)
  • Reassembled with new head bolts, gasket etc.
  • Put back in the car and compression tested it with result 9.0, 10.0, 13.0, 9.0 even worse than before!
  • Ran it up in case it needed to run through and bed in but no change
  • Noticed a water leak from around the water pump area

  • So at the moment the compression is not good and I've got a water leak. I'll investigate the leak but I'm pretty concerned about the lack of compression. My leak down tester seems to be a bit crap so I'm going to buy another one to verify it.

What could be causing the lack of compression? Other than rings and bent valves is there anything else? One thing I did notice is that all bar 1 of my followers didn't move when I squeezed the inside, they were rock solid. I tried to bang them on a wooden surface to get the inners out and clean it up but none of them would come apart. Could the fact that they're solid be causing the valve to not sit completely against the seat and cause a lack of compression?

I think my leak down tester is a bit crap, tried it on a spare engine and kept returning very different results! Will get another one and try it again

have the valve seats been cut back? tappets may be bottomed out.

ir if the tappets are all sticky and not pumping up that could be it.

If the lifters are all solid to touch, it sounds like they are pumped up.

I wouldn't worry about the soft one - I suspect it will be pumped up when subject to oil pressure, and is simply not retaining pressure when the engine is off.

I would try another compression test with around 10-15 ml of oil in each bore.

If the result improves, it's likely to be rings. If it doesn't, it may be a valve seating issue.

So the tappets should be solid and not be able to be compressed? The head has had a fair chunk of work on it already, significant porting and polishing plus a lot skimmed off, it wouldn't surprise me if there was additional work done on the valve seats.

Current plan is to get another leak down tester to verify the results of my first one, and I'll try Rich's idea of oil in the bore with another compression test.

the tappets will compress but should take a little force to do so, if they're squishy then I'd say they were faulty or there's an oil pressure fault (or it just hasn't run long enough)

The vast majority wouldn't move at all, some moved a fraction and there was one that moved a lot.

Not sure if this image is any use in figuring out if the valve seats have been cut back:
