Is it worth getting the crank / rods / pistons / flywheel etc. balanced? I'm going to be taking the head off and probably pistons out of the race car's engine again soon and wondered about getting the bottom end balanced up while it was apart. I've read various things about whether it's worth it or not but wondered if anyone has done it on the RS engine?

Speak to Miles mate he has done it a lot has a good contact, worth doing if you’re going to be revving it a lot higher, are you going forged at all?

Nothing forged and only revving to 7250 at the moment so nothing special

I doubt it really, oem pug stuff is inherently well matched already, only time you would need to balance stuff is after removal of material and when pushing the RPM well past design spec, as it is you're not going to the Phase1 rev limiter even.

That's what I was thinking. Only real changes to the bottom end are pocketed pistons and a lightweight flywheel so I was debating whether it was worth it, sounds like it's not.

Cranks are terribly balanced on these engines so I’d have it done if it was my engine and it’s hardly a massive cost, you will get a before and after graph and will be amazed just how out they are

I’ve seen many balanced cranks graphs before and after and trust me it’s well worth having done

The way i understood it, aside from helping reduce stresses in high revving engines is that an unbalanced assembly will be trying to shake itself as it spins which wastes energy, so having it balanced will potentially increase power slightly by increasing the efficiency.

I have no real world experience of having anything balanced yet though, just what i once read somewhere.
