All,

Hoping that by the end of Feb, I'll be continuing on with the Rallye restoration (been on the back burner for a few reasons of late) as I've done a shed load of very lucrative overtime over the Christmas period so will have plenty of ££ to continue.

So, once the engine bay had been blasted and painted (anyone any recommendations for anywhere in the Leicestershire area for doing that btw??), I'll be moving onto getting the engine rebuilt.

Still going for the OEM build so intending on having the block vapour blasted clean along with the gearbox. New bearings (main and rod) I guess are pretty much essential. Head is believed to be in good shape but will need to strip off to be sure (this is the engine that was in the second Rallye i bought that had a coil pack lead come off at Mallory). Clearly new H/G and head bolts (is a skim needed at all or just replace the HG and carry on?), along with new seals etc. I'd imagine new rings too. Is a hone required/recommended?

Will be getting a new cambelt (had a new belt and water pump the day before the track day but I noticed on strip down its very finely chaffed on the outer edge) as well.

Is it worth replacing anything else while I'm in there? I'll measure the crank and inspect it and make sure all is good there. Not expecting to have to grind it.

Is there a decent manual or book on these engines at all?

Cheers

Haynes manual covers the XU10 very well, as for the crank and bearings etc I would find an engine machinist and get them to check everything necessary, they will most of the time be able to supply all the parts required at reasonable prices.

heads by now almost definitely need a skim to remove any corrosion, beware that there's a maximum of 0.20 of a mm that can be removed safely.

only part I would definitely go o.e on is the headgasket, the rest if you get a reputable brand like Payen you'll be fine.

Although they're probably fine, also measure before and after on the crankshaft endfloat and replace the thrust bearings! Thumbs up
