Hi all,
Recently bought a GTI6 and was wondering what Phase I have.
1st date of registration was August 1997.
Also it doesn't have the GTI6 badge on the rear of the vehicle and from google searche of images and reading about the badges on here this is still confusing. Should it have the badge?

I'm just about to get a full service using genuine parts plus change the cambelt and water pump. I'm going to use a genuine water pump but is there anything else I should be changing at the same time? I'm reading 136 teeth or 137. Can I use either?

The clutch is slipping so a new clutch is also going to be added however the pedal is heavy as hell. Is this normal or is this another issue I have to sort?
Or will the new clutch and new cable sort the heavy pedal?

I rang my main dealer and there response was all the work will cost more than the GTI is worth so confidence in them has wavered somewhat.
My response was that's irrelevant isn't it, it's my money.

I want to do all the work and the same time but only do it once so any help/advice would be appreciated.

I'll post some photos once it's back up and running as it looks a bit of a dog at present.

Thanks.

1997 should be mk1 do you have seperate headlights to indicators
Yes there should be a badge regardless but there easily available
With regards to cost its not that expensive for the kind of machine you have aquired
To get a new car with that kind of capabilities new today youd be looking at 30k plus

The teeth on the belt are relevant to the tensioner used i believe but im not into belt changing just yet
The info is all here look in the faq section its really good

New clutch n cable wil fix the stiff i can operate one of mine with my finger tips

Post pics now bud its good to see the dog side and the improved when done

Good man for saving another of these legend vehicles

Help is here Smile

Welcome.

If you don't have either of these, you have a phase 1.
