Subject: Airbag Light Flashing

Ph.1 gti6, so only a driver's airbag and seatbelt pretensioners.

The airbag light is flashing. Previously, this has been solved by replacing the driver's seat connector, however, so far I have:
- Removed the driver's seat connector and soldered the wires together
- Soldered the passenger seat wires together
- Removed the resistor in place of the steering wheel airbag and re-soldered that to the wires
- Soldered one of the two plugs next to the ACU
- Unplugged and plugged the ACU back in

After all of this, it is still flashing. I could solder the other connector next to the ACU but I doubt that it is this. I have tried wiggling it, plugging it back in etc.

Are there any other things which can cause a flashing airbag light? Could a fuse be blown?

Dry soldier ??? Did you cook any of the soldier to much
Have you checked the wire end connections at the pretentioners

They connect under the seat and at the tentioners

Orher than that you could check the wiring under the carpet

I didn't just join them with solder. I wrapped the wires around each other and then melted solder into them.

Those plugs on the pretensioners are tight. The pre-tensioners do not appear to have fired.

I have 2x 1.8ohm resistors that I can wire in in place of the pretensioners, under the seats, but I'm not too hopeful that this will work because I've already soldered the pretensioner wires together etc.

This car has been without an MOT because of this for a while now, to the point where I'm seriously considering stripping it, and putting a rollcage, harnesses and bucket seats in just so I don't have to deal with the constant electrical issues anymore. I've got an upcoming sprint day which I'm getting very close to having to miss now as well.

Is there anything else that can cause this? Is this system fused at all?

1.8ohm resistors wired either side of the airbag control module where the connectors under the centre console are. All empty spaces on the fusebox filled with fuses just in case I moved one at some point.

Light still flashing....

Only thing I can think of trying is another airbag control module at this point...

I'd doubt it was the control module.......

Deffo got the resistors in the right way round?

resistors are not polarised Wink

you have put them in the ecu side of the loom not pretensioners side?

also double check the steering wheel is resistor'd before the clock spring not in the wheel centre as the clock spring could be broken

i have known of a airbag ecu to go faulty and flash the dash light so it is possible!
to get an MOT on this i bypassed the ecu and fitted a time delay for the light the owner was aware Wink

Strange I mine never failed it's mot and mine was flashing all the tester said was it's a old Peugeot no amount of airbags will save you if you crash

Resistors are not polarised. They are on the ACU side not the pre-tensioner side, ie. they are wired to the ACU.

The clock spring is removed entirely, the steering wheel resistor is directly into the plug on the loom behind the steering wheel, which, when installed a year or so ago worked fine. I have cut it off and resoldered it though.

I would have doubted the control module but I'm running out of alternatives to try.

have you a multy meter just double check the fused resistors you have got, one may be open circuit

Ok, worth a go. I did visually inspect them all and the fuses had no breaks, but I know that doesn't guarantee anything. I'm sure they are ok though.

first rule of electrical testing..
don't assume anything as it leads you up the garden path
Test it as there are 5 joints in the fuse resistor link from cable end to cable end Wink

i have had a few duff fuses from new out the bag fuses

If you wanted a quick "bodge" to get it through the MOT to avoid missing the sprint day, wire the airbag light on dash direct to a timed relay. So it comes on with ignition and then goes out after say 10 seconds.

A bodge obviously, but may get you out of a hole until you can find the real fault.

My understanding was that if the light didn't come on with the ignition it is now a fail.

I'm aware of the various bodges that can be done to get it through an MOT. I'd rather not have to.

no lamp could mean be a pass and advise thats why i said ask your tester Thumbs up

Exactly it's a pass and advise. It used to be a fail. It changed in 2012 or 2013 iirc

It used to say if the bulb was inoperative it's a fail. Now it's not a fail.

Yes, however the system functions by the lamp illuminating with ignition switch on and then going out if the system is working correctly.

The fact that the light does not illuminate (if the bulb was removed) shows that the system does have a fault as it is not working as designed, therefore would be a fail.
