Hello all,

I'm getting a small amount of engine ping when my engine has reached its hottest temperatures between 90-97 degrees.

As is typical with engine ping, it only occurs at low rpm, normally when I'm starting on a hill.

Fuel octane I'm using is between 95-98 octane.

What could be causing it? Hotspots? I'm assuming the knock sensor is working because I have no codes for it.

I would say that's pretty normal. They all pink a little under load on a hill from what I've seen.

Cheers Aaron, yes I've been reading about it just now and there are a lot of people saying it's affecting their cars so it must be pretty standard. Especially here in Aus where it's hot as hell atm.

I wonder if you can swap out the stock radiator for something that's actually decent.

Rig your fans to run from the air con button too unless the air con actually works that is. You could check that the plugs are okay too.

They shouldn't pink or knock. I thought they had anti knock sensors to.prevent this?

Yep, if it's knocking/pinking something isn't right.

It's the fuel/air mix ignighting before it should, which is bad news.

Never known one to pink either! If it's really hot you can try running hotter plugs (or check yours are in good nick) but I would suspect something else is amiss, check fuel pressure, compression and leak down if you have the gear. If they are all ok it could be a dodgy lambda running the engine leaner than it should be, get a garage to check your emissions and make sure its somewhere near what it should be.

Just an update, I filled up with 98 instead of 95 and so far I haven't heard it ping yet. It must be the s**t Aussie fuels.

On a hot day pinking is more likely, and you have a few of those up in Queensland. Higher octane fuel is a good idea in that case.
