well all the little LEDs were doing was blinking rapidly i decided to get a 'working' one off ebay but this seems to have the same problem
if i shine a torch into the detector it shuts the wipers off but as soon as i remove the torch it (detects) rain and starts the wipers again (flashing as the wipers move) but as soon as he wipers come to a stop it carries on blinking like the sensor hasnt picked up the LEDs from the unit

(it works by detecting the brightness of the LEDs going down as raindrops refract some of the light away)

yes ive tried without the torch if you were wondering

any ideas

Could this possibly be a relay issue?

if it was relay wouldent there be problems operating the wipers in the other stalk positions

unless two relays

but when in auto the wipers just act like normal intermitent ones

if i swap them around there is no change

can you get slow speed and fast speed? if you can the relay on the left is working

swap the relays can you get slow and fast speed? if yes both relays work

if so the sensor is probably shot the flashing led normally should be lit constant on a working unit

Just a thought, I have no idea if would actually have any effect, is the wiper stalk from an auto wiper car or has it been replaced with a standard stalk?

I had perfectly working wipers and sensor until my motor failed because I hadn't unblocked the water drain beneath it. I changed the motor for a second hand unit and ever since then, the wipers have a mind of their own on AUTO.
Every other setting is fine.
Maybe your motor is dodgy like my second hand one?
