I bought a gti 6 last week as I have wanted one for a while.

Its a bit rough on the outside but the engine is great.

I bought the car with only a non-peugeot key, without the remote locking it locks and unlocks the doors manually and starts the engine however does not activate the central locking or seem to set an alarm.

Its an 'S' reg phase 2, i don't really know where to start with fixing this any ideas???

Door jam wiring look for broken wires under the gaitor check the plug for dirty contacts etc

Or the wiring on the doors

Having said that with only one non peugeot key are the locks original ??

Yeah i don't know whether all the locks and ignition barrel has potentially been changed...

I will check the door looms, does the central locking require any coding on the key to make it work or is it just the turn of the key that activates it?

I don't know if the ECU is unlocked how could I check?

No the central locking doesn't work at all, whether i'm turning the key in the drivers door or the passenger door.

I believe so it has the receiver in a black plastic cover on the interior light cluster.

It also has two what i assume to be sensors on the roof near the driver and passenger window.

I'm not too fussed about the remote locking just the central locking as the boot doesn't have a barrel so wont unlock or lock at the mo.

Sorry if i am being a bit vague...

I had a look and there wasn't a central locking unit under the rear bench shelf.

I guess this could be the problem but their wasnt any loose cables either so could it be located somewhere else?

Maybe it's registered in 98 and has the non colour coded door protectors that's what made me think it was a ph2, where would the unit be in a phase 3 any ideas?

if it's got RF C/L, It's in the centre of the dash below the heater controls at the bottom. Check your key for a tiny chip of silicon inside near the key blade.

Cool, I will have a look is it easy getting access to the unit? I cant see any silicon on the key but it isn't an original so don't know whether that makes a difference.

I've had a look and the unit at the bottom of the dash looks fine and is plugged in. I've had a look at the wires between the door and car and quite a few of the cables are broken or fraying with exposed copper. I've taken it to an auto electrician and they quoted me for parts and labour to repair it £310. Am I just going to have to bite the bullet as I have no experience in cable repair? Also the cables seem to have broken into the connector not leaving anything to solder onto. What would you do?

As per cullys pic the moulded twist connector on ph3 hdi and alike are not heat moulded they can be cut out an old scrapper the wires poped out with a small screwdriver and re arranged as required

Re connect the wire with heat shrink crimp connectors take a couple or hours is quite simple you just need a electrical tester with a buzz out on it some crimps a lighter and the connectors

I even matched the wire colours when doing mine cost me 6 bucks for the bits did soilder mine also but you dont need to

I've got some heat shrink and a soldering iron hoping to tackle it myself first before forking out 300 on a repair. I'm a little worried if I take one out a scrap car the cables will be just as bad or not have the correct wires attached. Gonna buy a continuity tester tomorrow and give it a go in a couple of weekends time and check how much the loom is from the dealership if it's still available. The company I used said they can get it for me for 110 ex vat.

The last ones i picked up from an hdi where lovely

take a chair with you if you go to the dealers as you say £115 +vat if they can get them

if you go the scapper route count the wired pins in the plug and compare with yours as different models have different amounts of connected pins

also N/sIDE AND o/Side plugs have a different amount of connected pins

i have a n/side-o/side pair here second hand off a w reg GTI6

Doesnt matter about the pins the locations can be changed small screwdriver in the front slowly pull out the back and refit where required just make sure the wire guage is the same for each

These look like the non molded type easy adjustment easy fix

Cully if this guy doesnt take them i will

These are spot on for what you need bud
