Hi there,

Just release I´ve torqued down the head without using head bolt washers.. The bolts I´m using are Rich´s ones, do you think I´ll have to remove it again or they´ll go fine without them? Unsure

yes there would be washers under them originally, some bolt types come with washers attached, if the ones Rich supplied did not have any you do need to use the original ones.

The bolts from rich i got never came with a seperate washer and I had to use the genuine headbolt washers. The bolts do have an integrated washer in the head like quite alot off bolts but nowhere near as thick as the genuine washers.

I believe rich_w bolts are reusable but your headgasket most likely won't be.

iron block bolts are not stretch type, should be fine especially if not heat cycled, as for the gasket, im not sure myself, especially as its a steel item as standard.

Ok, thanks good news about the bolts...The head gasket is the MLS that Rich also supplies! What can be wrong with the gasket?

I believe Rich's gaskets have a copper ring in them, a bit like a crush washer and copper washers you would normally use once and then throw it away.

Surely remove one bolt at a time and refit a washer and re torque, as the engine hasn't been ran it will be fine, do one at a time. That's what I would do anyway, I have had bolts delivered to be before that haven't had washers and they have been fine also.

It's the 205 lumps without the larger spacer style washer over the water pump that causes the issue with cracked blocks.

Maybe I've just taken them out but I've never seen head bolt washers on the 3 or 4 engines I've taken apart? I presume they must all still be in there then!

Thanks for all your help! However, I had already followed Carl´s advise and removed the bolts one by one and replaced the washers... Craig903 I didn´t understand right if the problem you´re saying about the HG was the possibility of a smashed small rivet that would interfere with the alignment of the layers but I´ve checked the old gasket in the engine (also Rich´s one...) and it was absolutely intact and with no signs of a any failure even with all that time/pressure aplied
