Ah feck, that means I need to pull the shaft back out somehow to remove/reverse the seal! Just when I thought I was nearly finished.

Yeah, the issue you're going to have is trying to remove that seal will almost certainly damage it, so you'll need a new one for sure. Thumbs up

I take it then the seal is different on both sides? ie. how do I know which way in it goes?

They're lipped, they only seal properly in one direction, like most oil seals.

Cheers guys, I've ordered a new one with the expectation that the old one will possibly get mangled getting it out.

Yes, the housings are different sizes on each side so they are different size oil seals.

As Phillipm says, the 'lip' of the seal fits on the outside as you're looking at the housing.

Sorry I didn't mean are the seals different on both sides of the housing, I know one is bigger than the other...is there a certain way round the seal goes in? I only have a leak from the drivers side.

My new seal arrived today and going to fit it tonight. Just so I'm absolutely certain here, the seal goes in this way......

and not this way.....

Also, can someone confirm if the outer face of the seal should be flush with the housing or slightly proud?.....there seems to be conflicting opinions on this

Yes top pic is correct way. Thats newer type seal just fit it flush.

Make sure you tap it in with a nice fitting socket or something dead flat to push it in by the outside and not damage the inside.
