Hi all, firstly hello and thankyou to everyone, I have been lurking for some time searching for clues but now the time has come to emerge from the woodwork. I desperately require assistance from the experts

I really hope someone can shed some light on this as its driving me round the bend!

97 silver 6 developed an Intermittent starting issue a few weeks ago, seems to roll the dice as to whether it will start or not? looked over it with a technician friend and confirmed spark but no fuel. We have replaced the fuel pump to no avail and moved on to replacing the relay but still no luck, the problem persists.

As such we think we can rule out things like immo(has spark), crank sensor (has spark) now fuel pump and relay is this correct?

In faulted state, at first fail, it will start badly, splutter and die immedietley, as if not enough fuel is being delivered and its failing to start on the dribbles in the line, then will just crank but not start until it 'decides' to go again. When it runs it runs perfectly. I have also noticed a new quirk which is the engine temp light now swings quickly up and down a couple of times whereas before, at the second ignition position it would illuminate, needle would rise up and stay for a few seconds then come back down, is this related?

It has spent the last few days in a garage and they couldn't get it to fault, started every time on the button only to have issues an hour after I picked it up with newly sealed fuel pump and new relay.

I'm desperate to get to the bottom of this as the anxiety of not knowing if it will start when it's time to go to work or come home is unbearable, any info or help would be massivley appreciated.

Many thanks,
Hatch

the waggly oil temp needle will be a bad connection or damaged wiring somewhere, the gauge shows oil level on ignition then temp when running (or pressure on a phase1)

is it a keypad immobiliser or the later transponder type?

I think I would be checking the condition of the two large engine loom plugs and also the front end loom under the front crossmember.

Thanks for the prompt response,

It's a later transponder type key so no keypad.

Ive just gone out to the car surprise surprise it wouldnt start, the fuel pump isnt priming after a new pump and relay, what could cause this?

Main loom plugs and front end loom have gone right over my head and I wouldn't know where to start, is there a diagram anywhere? Would I be checking visually for damage and wiggling/cleaning connectors or getting a voltmeter out?

Should I consider calling an auto electrician at this stage? I'm very much an amateur and don't know my arse from my elbow when it comes to electrics

Open the bonnet and look down the radiator and across to the right and there are 3 multi plugs. Twist them round anticlockwise. Make sure there is no loose pins or green snot build up or corrosion etc then spray with a good electrical cleaner and refit

I had a similar problem with mine when I bought it ?
Changed Fuel filter canister that was 80% blocked with old crud fuel out of the tank ?
Didnt look like mine had ever been changed .!!!

Simple one & Worked like a dream since Thumbs up

Also make sure your Tanks not pressurizing ...just take the fuel filler cap off tank where you put fuel in & try & start m8 ...Thumbs up

You need to bridge pins 5 and 8 on the Multi function relay (behind the battery box) to see if the fuel pump primes.

If it does then the relay is probably bad (I read you have changed it, so probably not) in which case it will be tracing back to the next point at which the relay receives it's 12v supply from.

Hi guys,

Thank you for the tips and suggestions and sorry for the delayed response,

I have been unable to solve the issue due to time constraints and lack of technical knowledge and have bought another car out necessity and desperation.

The 6 will soon be going up for sale, I have heard its worth contacting Pug1off in case they're looking for one but I'll be listing it in For Sale here before any other well known platforms.

Regards,

Hatch
