With the ignition I know you put it to position 2 and allegedly you can push the 2 tabs in and 'slide' the barrel out.

If those 2 tabs don't fully retract it's obviously a pain to get out!

I have just replaced the lockset on a gti6, door locks done in about 30 seconds each but having a nightmare with the ignition barrel, I have got the old one out with a bit of brute force as I wasn't worried about damaging it, the new one is in but as I had to gently tap it in to position I think I may have damaged it and the key is very notchy and sticks on a little, The operation before I put it on was perfect so think I may have damaged it on fitting!

Any suggestions on how to get the tabs to fully retract to make removal of the 'new' one easier so I can have a proper look at it!

I removed one the other day that was giving me grief, I was wiggling the key between second click and what would start the car whilst applying pressure to the notches and eventually it found a sweet spot and they pushed fully in.

I've never had issues so can't really console you. Even when I haven't had keys a cold chisel makes light work of the column so it slides out LOL

Push the brass tabs down with a screwdriver whilst you turn the key. You will feel the loss of resistance when it's in the right point and it should be smooth. When it's back out, do the same with it in your hand and ensure it's nice and freely moving and you haven't damaged it. You may have burred the end over and caused it to catch.
