Guys,

Trying to remove the cat so I can get the heat shield behind it off and finish prepping the chassis.

Read several threads on it, popular opionion seems to be work round the subframe, 10mm ring spanner on top, 10mm deep reach socket on the bottom. The issue I've got is I can't get the ring spanner on the top bolt head. Doesn't feel like there is much prtuding above the flat surface and what there is is pretty rusted up. The bottom nuts don't look clever either.

Ideally, I'd want to cut them off and get a new fitting kit as they are only £20 or so but struggling to get in to cut them....

Seems as if my only option is remove the subframe to give the access needed.....

Any other ideas?

try a 10mm 6 sided 1/4" drive socket on the top, preferably held by an assistant, your spanner is probably too thick walled.

depends what other tools you have access to really, dropping the subframe is no small task, its one I would avoid as much as possible especially with the engine still in place.

you might get a hacksaw blade in there but that will take a while, a reciprocating saw would p**s it if you can get near it, or if you drop the engine forwards you can get a small bodied grinder in there with a slitting disc.

Mei,

What's involved in dropping the subframe?

From what I can gather I'll need to disconnect the gear linkage. What about the connection with the steering column and the power steering pump pipes?

The engine will be coming out sooner rather than later anyway......does the subframe need to be off first before you do that?

no not at all, engine goes up and forwards, so slam panel and bumper off.

subframe is 6 bolts to the shell, plus steering column, track rod ends, lower balljoints, ARB droplinks, PAS feed and return pipes, main gear rod plus linkages if transmission still in place.
lower engine mount fork.

I'm about to cut the bolts in mine - will be using my battery rip saw as bolts have been rounded

I've got 2 genuine cat kits as well but obviously I will need one but may part with the other ?

I just undo all exhaust rubber mounts. Then push exhaust fully to the offside and undo the nearside nut and then same for the other side With the pressure on it holds the bolt and should undo fine ;-)

Thanks guys. It's off now, eventually.

Now, does anyone know if the heat shield behind the cat will come off with the manifold still in place?

Short answer is yes but the bloody subframe is in the way.

Is it possible to unbolt the subframe and lower it without have to disconnect everything, just to give me the clearance I'll need?

Just undo all the subframe bolts a few turns an lever the back down slightly you might get it past.
