So, iv had the bottom end rebuilt on the dimma and want to run it in for 100 miles or so before using the royal purple oil, would you suggest using a breaking in oil or just a decent oil? |

Comma do a running in oil that is like water, but I usually use cheap thin oil, like Asdas own brand or something. Keep the revs up around 2-4k for the first twenty minutes to create decent pressure behind the rings, but don't hold the revs at a certain speed. Be safe to drive to with the thin stuff in it but I wouldn't give it full beans. ________________________________________ Oulton Park in a BTCC 306 vid 1Oulton Park in a BTCC 306 vid 2 Lap of the 'ring |

Be aware running in should be done using a mineral oil, semi and fully synth are too refined and actually arrest the breaking in of the rings in the bores which can lead to burning oil and ur engine being down on power due to lost compression. I did a fair bit of research on this subject last year for breaking my own engine in, there are varying opinions out there but the one that is common was using a mineral oil to assist breaking the rings in, remember bottom end bearings run on a film of oil so really require no breaking in, it's all to do with breaking the rings into the bores. ________________________________________ Team Running Engine again!Team Negative Camber! The rings were not changed, just the bearings that need it really, I noticed rp do a breaking in oil so was thinking about using that, it's more to flush the engine of all deposits during the first 100 or so miles |

What happens if you have new piston rings but also new camshafts? I've read that camshaft bedding in should have the rpm held between 2-2.5k, but for correct piston ring sealing then engine needs to be under load and the rpm varied? ________________________________________ Team 'unintentional rat look' |

Ollie, if it's just had new bearings it doesn't need bedding in. Rings and cams are the only thing that require bedding in in an engine. If you want to flush the engine I'd personally just use 5/30 mineral oil or similar. Clen666, in an ideal world you'd bed the rings in with used cams, you'd then fit your new cams and bed those in. If this isn't possible you HAVE to bed the cams in first which as you've already pointed out isn't ideal for the rings which need loading up. ________________________________________ www.bridgecraftmotorsport.co.uk |
