Recently bought a Peugeot 206 Gti 180, and noticed the back box is in bad shape. It's pretty rusty and unsightly and looks pathetic. Also, it's far too quiet and gives off a wheezy sound.

Looking about it would seem all aftermarket replacements are very expensive new, and very scarce as second hand. As I'd rather not spend a fortune on a box for what was a pretty cheap car, I was wondering if there is a way around this. My thoughts were possibly swapping the exhaust from the cat back, for one from a Gti 140, as these are much more readily available. Would it even be possible to bodge on a box from a completely different model? The distance isn't far. I have no idea what's compatible, and my usual advice circles are pretty slow to respond on the matter.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Pebbles Thumbs up

exhaust from a 140 won't fit because of the different rear suspension setup.

They cost £££ though!

Would it be hard to just whack a box on from a 306 with a bit of pipe made to fit? Or a straight pipe from the centre section? I can do basic welding.

Straight pipe! Do it! It'll be completely rugged and terrible but cheap and definitely not quiet and wheezy, also sounds like you don't really care about the de tune effect from it

What would cause 'detune'? Do they rely on back pressure?

Also, I doubt the straight pipe would be that bad noise wise, ran a gti6 without a back box for a short while. Although I'd rather it was under 100dB so I could get on track.

Being a factory tuned NA pug I'd assume so (ready to be proven otherwise) to get exhaust length resonance. I've had my 6 with a unrestrictive mid and back box and I couldn't stand the 115db it had (it ran worse, slower and less economic than a mates 6) But in my experience most of the volume reduction is in the back box (mid box is more tone)

It's common for a pug to produce slightly more power, and slightly less torque after a decat, but never found a back box to make a massive amount of difference.

I'd be interested to have a go at bodging a 306 magnex on the 206.

I had a Janspeed on my 180 and it sounded quite nice.

Pm ash as he bought a gti 180 for his new track car, might have something laying about.

Yes mate, it's about 14 months old, no real rust to mention, chrome tips are a little grubby though.

Someone's selling a cat back stainless system on Facebook Sam Bates tried tagging you in it. Worth a look for £75....

Or you could sell it and get another 306.... Lol

Nah, it's better than most people say. Smile I've had 106's and 306's and fancied a change. Would like a 205 but trying to afford a new motorbike and saving for a house means my funds were relatively limited.
