Been reading a little about beams etc as I'm looking at having the one off my Rallye to clean it up.....

What effect does changing the thickness of the torsion beam have? I'm assuming it alters the suspension rate, much like differing spring rates do on spring and strut set ups?

Why are the 21mm Xsara ones in demand?

Thanks

you mean torsion bar not beam, beam is the name for the whole assembly

21mm are stiffer than 20 by about 20%

every 1mm increase stiffens the rear beam at a rate off around 25%. I remember reading this somewhere. so maybe someone else can clarify it?

20mm | 100% | 110lb (i.e. standard)
21mm | 122% | 150-180lb (i.e. Eibach 7011)
23.5mm | 191% | 300-350lb
25mm | 244% | 450lb

That info was taken from a thread posted a while back

I had 24's on till a while ago and were spot on in a smooth track environment but to bouncy even with GAZ's cranked up to control them when on the road.

As said depends what you want from the car and how much or little weight you have at the back as well as your driving style.

I'm not quite sure really. Something responsive but not crashy, something that's going to stand up to some fast road driving and enhance the handling......

I'd just go for 21's personally but I've found that having decent rear shocks with adjustable bump and rebound makes more difference.

I'm currently running 21mm bars with GAZ Gold adjustable dampers. I massively prefer them to B6 rear dampers which most people tend to go for as their slightly stronger than standard but not too solid. Depends what your budget is.

A lot of people find they can't get the bars out anyway LOL

Thanks for that.

I'm half tempted to buy another beam in bits and clean it up and rebuild it. Doesn't matter it the torsion bars won't come.out of the old one then...!!

Thanks for the shocks advice, that's useful

What front suspension set up will you be using?
