So, it looks like I may have a Red Rallye in my sights.....It's had a lot of the major stuff done (belts, pump, beam, lowered etc) and I really want to make it as clean and mint as possible but.......if there were some mods you'd describe as essential and others that are just down right great, what would they be?

I know about the supercharger kits and whilst probably top of the desireable tree, off limits right now. I know phillipm used to make some very good stuff and I've seen mention of his upper and lower braces but what else is out there?

But out of touch still at the mo!

I was thinking perhaps more from a mechanical point of view than anything else. Then only external mods I can see on the one I'm interested in are a set of P3 headlights.

Things like roller bearing wishbones etc. Improvements on std stuff but perhaps under the skin than above it....

Miles gear linkages are good, I've got berlingo p bushes which also made a big difference but mine were pretty knackered, i think some of the roller bush stuff is too harsh to road use not tried it myself but thats the impression i got. What you planning on using the car for ?

It's going to be a second/weekend toy. I've the Mondeo for daily hack duties and the buggy for fun too but that's very weather dependant.

Won't be doing many miles and I will be trying to clean it up (it's bloody clean as it is) underneath etc. No plans for wild mods and I want it to be as std as possible but just upgrade anything mechanical where there is now.something better

When i had one i found the following a good balance...

Baker BM Engine and Gearbox Mounts
Gear Rods
A quickshift- not that GE thing but a proper base mounted one.
New suspension just standard B4's eibachs and OE mounts
New clutch release bearing cable etc
DS2500 pads on standard discs but really standard would be fine
Braided hoses
An ICV that works
Exhaust was a Jetex, was OK but rusted a bit. but getting a standard one these days probably difficult.
Solid rear mounts and a freshly refurbished beam
Standard alloys
P3 lights

Things i wouldn't have done on reflection:

Stuck with a standard airbox- completely pointless to upgrade
Billet flywheel in my opinion the revs used to drop really quickly when engaging the clutch- i wonder if this was contributing to stalling issues when coming to a stop.

Mines handling lovely now it's got

Decent rubber beam mounts
Spa PSX all round
1" anti roll bar
KD upper strut brace
My own lower strut brace

The 13 row oil cooler was a worthwhile upgrade too.
Plus all the suspension is now new.

I've never driven a standard car but the handling of mine is incredible - that's running Bilstein B8's, Eibach Springs, solid beam mounts, rose jointed drop links, not sure on the rear beam but whilst firm its not horrendous and not too low either...

B8s with eibachs is a very nice setup on these, new standard stuff with eibachs isn't bad either.

^ This. Instead of spending (lots) of money trying to get more power, Id always advise spending money on refreshing the suspension/ steering on these so they are tip top.

All good info, guys! My tyres, dampers, brakes, exhaust and washer jets are all sorted...

Might need a clutch next year, so will do the release bearing, engine/box bushes and maybe gear linkages then.

But I'll be watching this thread with interest...

Cheers!

Best cheap mods , everyone should do them

Xsara Mist Jets (so, so, so ,much better)
Mirror Tweeters from a 306 HDI (noticeably better, cost me 8 quid)
Miles Gear linkages (added bonus of better strength too)

Suspension wise I've gone for:
First of all everything was new and done at the same time, and everything was replaced.
B8's up front with Eibachs
A phillipm double tube strutbrace on the bottom
Refurbed beam with brand new 306hdi estate bars (21mm), 205 challenge 1038 dampers, Baker BM solid mounts.
Light 16x7 wheels with 205 45/16s on them

Basically now its got loads of grip, Corners like its on rails and is very adjustable.
Rear was set about -30mm I think.

I've got a red Rallye and mainly used new OE parts on mine, but a few things I've changed from standard are:

Xsara VTS rack. Highly recommend this mod, the quicker rack makes the car feel much more pointy and responsive, especially hammering along B roads.

Van front P-bushes - an OEM Peugeot part but more solidly constructed of machined alloy than the original stamped steel bushes.

Strut brace - more chassis rigidity can't be bad. I used a KD racing one which can only be got second hand now, but it is the stiffest design (with the possible exception of Phillip M's, but not sure he's made any of these for sale?).

Citroen C5 wheels - the ones that look like steels but are alloy and only weigh 4.7kg each. I like the fact they go with the Rallye lightweight ethos, and the 106 Rallye had steels from new so they look at home. Lightness will help acceleration and economy, but not a night and day difference.

Black masked P3 headlights - another OEM+ type mod that updates the car and looks good but is not an obvious, chavved up type change. Lots of Rallyes have these now, and I think Pug dealers may have sold Valeo black mask headlights back in the day? The lighting output is a bit better than the P2 frosted numbers. I've also put Philips Vision Plus standard wattage bulbs in.

Undertray - I thought this would improve economy with better underbody airflow, but the difference is minimal.

I also changed some stuff in the interior, mainly to replace knackered gear knob and the fact I didn't like the rubber base spec Rallye steering wheel. So it's now got a leather P3 GTI6 steering wheel, and the OEM P3 gear knob and handbrake lever with the silver bits.

The rest of it I like as is, and is all reversible if so desired. The only other thing is I find the seats uncomfortable on long trips, because I'm tall. But changing a Rallye interior is regarded by many as heresy.
